Another way is when the submarine is floating, it’s water displacing shape is the usual cigar shaped cylinder that exclude water from its outside.  When it submerges, it’s water displacing shape becomes a complicated thing in which various parts of the interior of cylinder  transforms into pinched off pockets of the exterior water.

So the submarine changed its water displacing shape, even if not its hydrodynamic shape, when it submerges.
Not really, because the buoyancy tanks are closed off from the outside. The water in the tanks is the same as the equipment or the crew when it comes to buoyancy.

The buoyancy tank no longer displace water. It accommodate water now.

-and yet it's shape hasn't changed. So it must be something else that accounts for the new behavior. I wonder if there's a term for that something? Wink

What me and Anomalocaris are stating here is that mass is the cause of the problem and because of that it can't be the answer. For example: When i think of a ship to carry petroleum I'm not gona reduce it's mass so that it could float , it won't serve my anything good because the ship will only be able to sustain herself and no amount of petroleum.

Yes.   A submarine submerges by reducing the amount of water it displaces.  It does so by allowing water into parts of its interior, name the ballast tanks, that formerly excluded, thus displaced, water...

It’s external shape hasn’t changed. But who said the shape effecting water displacement has to be a single external shape? The shape of the parts that excluded water has changed.

It’s a concept that flows from understanding of buoyancy.

Hydrodynamic shape is , wich includes a shape that could displace a large amount of water.

We don't say that a boxes shape has changed depending on whether or not it's full.

I believe the term you are looking for is, 'dislocating'.

Just for clarity, I know what you mean to say here Anom..I'm just suggesting that it's a novel descreption for things already better described elsewise. That, for purposes of bouyancy, imagining the cigar shape with the tanks empty, it's displacement is x...but the same craft with the tanks simply removed doesn;t displace the same amount of water..and filling the tanks produces the same effect as the tanks having been removed entirely.

A better example of that would be a buoy with external and detachable floats, though.

We don't say that a boxes shape has changed depending on whether or not it's full.

But how much Air a box displaces depends on whether there is air inside or not.
