Stray thought:  A concern for purity is said to be one of five foundations of human morality.  Seemingly an obsession with the idea of God is an expression of that moral foundation.  But then what about an obsession with idea of Truth which leads to the rejection of gods?  Wouldn't that also be an expression of purity.  Conservatives are said to rank purity more highly than do liberals, but maybe they are just more conscious of it as such.  Maybe all the moral dimensions are always active only we are more or less aware of their sway in our affairs.
