What do you define "heavily armed" as being?
When you stockpile weapons because you either are someone who thinks the 12 Imam is coming, or the second coming of Christ, or you are a Jew who shits his pants because someone sat you next to a woman on a commercial passenger jet.

However, in this case the stockpile would be in the local police armory until needed. Cops don't really walk/ride around in tactical gear. It's a PITA.

Body armor, protective gear, helps the LEOs go home at night. Rifles, responsive to the gear they're likely to come up against. Not over-the-top by any means.
I mean, it can be over the top, depending on the situation, but it's the right gear for a hostile situation.
I once had a Lakewood, WA police officer and his partner bang on my door in the early evening. We opened the door without a word and had their rifles pointed directly in our faces. We were forced to back up into the apartment with our hands up. Then, they realized they had the wrong apartment for a domestic call they'd received. A rifle is a bit much for a house call for domestic, especially when you have the wrong apartment. Yes, I know domestics are the most dangerous calls, but a pistol would have been just fine. It not drawn and in my face would have been great too. I didn't mind. I had a laugh that they didn't notice I was drinking underage watching the Red Sox game. Still, there were things that could have been done better.

They had control of the situation, which meant that nobody got hurt. Except for a few pairs of wet knickers.

Having control isn't not knowing the difference between an A and a C and aiming a rifle directly at someone's face who's just chillin' watching a baseball game. That's just my opinion. Again, I was never mad, and I totally laughed it off, but it wasn't the most professional thing a cop's ever done.

Except for the fact, and it is a fact, that I am not defending anyone. I am urging people to stop the goddamned name-calling and vituperation, set their personal feelings aside, and get to work with forward steps.
It's a lot harder than virtue-signalling, but on the other hand it at least stands a chance of working. Demonizing those who disagree with you, not so much.

I used to serve Federal Wants in Southern California, Southern Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. Places like South Central LA, I had 20 US Marshals with me. We always had control of the situation, indisputably. Some loco hombres didn't realize that, of course.

I wasn't in South Central. They weren't U.S. Marshals. I still think knocking on the wrong door is not control.

I'll give you the wrong door, but the rest is SOP and it works, that's why it is done that way. It has been shown to reduce casualties. NOT being in control is the No. 1 cause of deaths in those raids, which was my point.
BTW, you'd like Southie, it's ... exotic. A guy charged me with a bayonet once. Once.
