I've always wondered why America lags behind other industrialized countries in terms of standard of living. Are religion and guns the prime suspects?

I don't think that's a true statement at all. Only way it can be called true is if you classify 'industrialized countries' as those specifically with higher standards of living than America. USA ranks 10 on the human development index https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...ment_Index The only countries they are behind are a small handful of western European countries that spent centuries plundering the rest of the world.
