Pet Photos thread where too much is never enough.

He was my hiking pal and the recipient of hundreds of belly rubs, cuddles and treats. He had liver cancer that wasn't symptomatic until a couple of weeks ago. We had to put him down the day they found it. He was 8.

Such a shame, Shel.    They are so stoic that you don't know they are really sick until it is too late.... not that there is much that can be done for liver cancer.  I lost one to it and we knew she was sick when one day she just stopped eating.

A lot of them have that same trick, though.  Here's my Fred.

I'm sorry to hear you went through the same thing. I've discovered it's quite common with goldens. I was considering adopting one, but I think we've decided we want mutts in the hope that we will have them longer.

Yes, its a problem.  Although the list of genetic disorders is not restricted.  Breeders have messed a lot of dogs up by too much inbreeding.  Then again, the problem with mixes is you never can be sure what they are mixes of.  I wouldn't want anything that was mixed with a pit bull.

If you want a breed...but you also want the benefits of heterostasis..allow me to suggest the Beagle.  A pure blooded beagle is...by definition..a purebred mutt.

Before we inherited an Aussie and fell in love with herding breeds, my all time favorite dog was a Golden/Lab cross.  Sophie looked more Lab, black being dominant apparently since all the puppies were, but her mom was a small, papered Golden.  But she lived fifteen and a half years and enjoyed a nice walk and two meals on her next to the last day.  I think even a cross breed will give you some of that mongrel vitality, plus you have a greater expectation of getting traits you hope for.

Of course if what you really want is a dog to contribute some small varmint for the stew pot, get a beagle.

I don't mind pit bulls.

Have you ever tried to teach a Beagle to walk on a leash, not to chase his nose wherever it takes him or really anything? They're great, if you're trying to sniff things out or just want to play. They're horrible to train.

Sadly I'm on the list for the county shelters and its pit bull after pit bull and many of them are reported with wounds from the fights they get in.  I know a lot of it is training but even when we used to go to the dog park every time there was a dust up between the dogs there was always a pit at the bottom of it.  And these would have just been "pets."  The old nurture v nature argument sometimes obscures the fact that it is hard to avoid "nature."

I have a house beagle.  She's a pain in the ass.  Her name is Easy.  I still trained her as a hunting dog, lol..but she's gunshy.  We play cool games like "chase the neighbors rabbits" and "is that a deer I smell?".  Also....our favorite game...dragging really unenthusiastic cats around the house by their head and/or neck.

Wink

I wanna get a dozen of em. Real easy up here because the guys who breed them would throw them in a trash can if they aren't cool with guns.

I've had pretty good luck with pits among my family and friends. Haven't really had any problems, but there's no denying their strength if they do decide to go crazy.

We've had two dog bites in my family. I was bit by a Rotty. My sister was bit by a Chow.
