I thought gpa only went to 4.0?  Did grade inflation creep in?

How can you do more than perfect?

My granddaughter had a 4.3 GPA and is now attending Dennison University. This year she'll be attending a university in Italy for three months and she also just received a letter from Dennison that she has been invited to attend a university in Finland for two years. So, yeah, you can have better than a 4.0.

Yeah, but the issue was "how can it happen?" not "does it happen?"  Once again, Google to the rescue.

It can’t unless your school uses weighting which give more credits to honors or AP classes. Some schools weigh an AP class as a 4.5, 4.8, or even a 5.0. this is how people come up with GPAs over 4.0.

So, yeah.  Grade Inflation.

Hmm... I'm with you. I never heard of being better than a 4.0 either until my granddaughter graduated high school two years ago. She was the top Valedictorian in her graduating class. Funny how they work things these days. We're getting old, dude.

Hmm... I'm with you. I never heard of being better than a 4.0 either until my granddaughter graduated high school two years ago. She was the top Valedictorian in her graduating class. Funny how they work things these days.  We're getting old, dude.

We didn't have AP classes when I was in high school (graduated in '85). There was a local community college where we could earn credits for transfer to four-year schools, but that had nothing to do with our high school GPAs. 4.0 was the ceiling back then.
