You know - if the federal government would let the tobacco farmers plant hemp seeds and grow hemp for manufacturing, it would be good for the US economy as well. It can be made into so many different things. Cloth, paper goods, rope for naval shipyards. The list goes on and on. Canada has already embraced that idea for years now.
Just some food for thought. Disclaimer: I am only responsible for what I say, not what you choose to understand.
That's what most of the tobacco regions did before tobacco.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
It's my understanding that during WW2, the government was all too willing to use industrial hemp to make the ropes the Navy used for their ships. Once the war ended, the government decided to ban the use of the plant, simply because they no longer had a use for it.
Or something like that. Disclaimer: I am only responsible for what I say, not what you choose to understand.

Most of that came from kentucky, but after ww2, cheap synthetic fibers combined with the controlled substances act in 1970 (adding onto the marijuana tax act and effectively criminalizing hemp production) made tobacco a profitable alternative for an area with unreliable fruit set. It's been partially relegalized..and we have the largest amount of acres under hemp of any state. 13k, as of last year.
Still, what;ls grown here is textile grade with a low thc count and the state hasn't decriminalized...so..it's not as profitable to a small farmer as well leveraged vmp would be. Even when we do decriminalize (when, lol..when) it's highly likely that the licensing fees and taxes will be a barrier. Shame...kentucky would be americas weedbasket. Just think, 20g of the sticky shit could cost you less than $5. There's a solution to organized crime..right thur.
