You don;t have to, and you certainly aren't doing so out of open-mindedness. People argue about -everything. My son cut his finger with a butterknife over the weekend. He spent the next 20 minutes arguing that he -hadn't- cut his finger with a butterknife. Disagreement is one of those basic facts of life. The fact that you keep reasserting yourself, like my son, in the face of our disagreement tells me that you don;t even believe what you're saying, here. How could you? If disagreement prevents you from knowing something..then you can;t know what you continually reassert. Nevertheless, you seem pretty convinced that you're on to something.
Allow me to suggest another basic fact of life for you to incorporate. There are no pictures of my dead nanas ghost.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Again, those examples you brought up are the most basic things that we can be sure of. But then there are those types of debates where it's not so obvious at all and it requires full research in order to determine the real truth.

The term you're looking for here is "special pleading" not "open mindedness". I contend that the fact that there are no pictures of my nanas ghost is just as basic a fact of life as any other. If there was a debate between an intelligent person and a really dumb person such as someone who says that drinking poison would be lethal for you and another person who denies this and says that it will make you live forever, then we can just give up on the debate with this person, conclude that he is just crazy, and move on with our lives. We needn't to do any further researching into what this crazy person is saying. But when it comes to a debate between intelligent people and other intelligent people, we shouldn't use the same shortcut method since it would be treating these intelligent people as being dumb as that crazy person who thought that drinking poison would make you live forever.

Intelligent people are perfectly capable of clinging to stupid ideas. Case example..paranormal researchers. It;s the -idea- that does or doesn't have merit. It doesn't matter who holds it or advocates it. There will always be -someone- willing to advocate for an idea with no merit. Another one of those basic facts of life for you to incorporate.

No proper evidence presented = No belief
It's not a shortcut. It's a methodology. Without it, you believe any utter shit any random person comes up with. Even intelligent people get fooled and believe stuff without proper evidence, if it's one of their "pet woos". That's no reason for every other intelligent person to follow suit.
I certainly don't have time to chase people around demanding to see their evidence. They can present it, or not.

Well, I have no way of knowing if it is instead the skeptics who are intelligent people clinging to the stupid idea that we are just biological machines with only one life to live or if it is instead the paranormal researchers who are clinging to a stupid idea. Again, I think it requires full research in order to determine who is the intelligent person clinging to a stupid, false idea. Or maybe there are shortcuts that we can use to determine this. I really don't know. I am, for now, just arguing against the idea that we can use shortcuts.
