Open discussion of the Christian Why We're Here thread
RE: Open discussion of the Christian Why We're Here thread
I can't even see how they fail to find the meaning in this life -with- the external/eternal requirement.  I think it might simply be the case that they feel unknown, undervalued, and forgettable, and find satisfaction in a proxy who rewards them with value and meaning through patronage for their participation.....but maybe ...just maybe, if they put in the effort and deserved it, they wouldn;t feel the need to manufacture counterfeit accomplishments?

Besides, theres nothing more temporary and internal than the gods we imagine..each one of them dies with the individual who created and maintained them.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Interesting how the same theists who believe that the meaning and value of their life is given to the by their god also believe in an objective morality that would exist even if the human race were wiped out.

Or that this life and world and universe, created for them by god himself, is utterly meaningless.  That;s alot of divine effort..certainly beyond the abilities of the faithful, the lord of creation isn;t likely to agree on it having no value.

I don't see the conflict. Good and evil is something that exists outside of us.

Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I don't see the conflict.

Didn't say there was a conflict. I suppose it is a consistent world view.

So you have no intrinsic good or evil?
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

I don't understand the question.

I meant the conflict between the 2 things you mentioned we believe in. You phrased it like those 2 things should be mutually exclussive, or contradictory to each other.

OK obviously CL was editing her post when I replied. It happens.

I find it interesting that theists are so sure that good and evil exists outside of us. If you wiped out all of the human race they seem to think that good and evil would still exist. But they cannot explain how this could be. It's basically the whole god question but in a different form and the same questions can be asked.

Like what is good and evil? / What is a god?

Why do you believe that good & evil / a god exists as a separate entity when it cannot be measured or sensed?

etc.

OK I see what you mean. I wasn't intending to make it sound like a conflict but a pattern of thinking common to theists.

This thread inspired by my other thread about how perhaps theists are more driven by things external to themselves and are less introspective.
