Right?
Now, we can do both...but do you really think that suicide prevention and gang interdiction could both be best handled by the same laws or strategy? Hell, would you even want to combine their funding dependencies? I wouldn;t. I know how our government works, lol.
Wanna stop suicides by gun? Make mental health checkups part of everyones safety net. There go six of every ten shootings, potentially. Wanna prevent violent shootings? Targeted buybacks, downright surgical sale prohibitions, and the de-armament of police. Three of ten. Independant programs, independant funding, so that someone grinding an axe on either won;t hit them both at once.
That last one of ten? Hammer people who leave their guns loaded on the nightstand to the fullest extent of existing law..like you would if somebody just flat drove their car into some other guys house.
Voila, gun problem in america solved. We can do both
This sounds like Wyrd saying we need to choose between helping the homeless and helping refugees .

We can do all three, and add licensing in too..as a fourth...but theres still the fact that each item would do different things. Licensing might help prevent some accidental shootings. It wont stop negligent shootings any more than drivers licenses stop negligent operators. It wont stop violent shootings any more than it stops people who intentionally run over pedestrians, and it wont stop suicides any more that it stops people who leave their car running in the garage.
These are all distinct and disparate problems with their own best solutions.
Feel me? This is a wedge issue..it;s been weaponized for political profit..the cost of that is that nothing effective -ever- gets done. If it did, the people involved would lose their wedge.

Feel me? I don't really agree but understand were your coming from. But i can't view them as issues in a vacuum . But i agree it is a wedge issue and politics have stalled the issue

Thats what irritates me, as an american super user with a legit arsenal. Im so far to the left of the american political discourse that I consider the dems to be right wing authoritarian shitwads and the entire electoral and legislative system a prop to maintain the status q.
Im tired of people pretending to be progressive by trying to ban "assault style rifles". Can I get some -actual- progressive policy, plz thx k and buh-bye?
I'm ready to take their test. I already get routine mental health screening and because of this I know how nice it would be if everyone did. I;d help to purchase targeted firearms and sell em to the gov at a profit. I would plead no contest if one of my kids got ahold of one of my guns and did something fucked up.... out of pure shame.
