I never get the whole, "I'll pray for you" thing. Pray for what? For God to present a case why anyone should worship a torturer? For God to stop being a total cunt in general? For God to override any agency we have and turn us into religious sheep?

It never makes any sense whatever way you look at it. If they aren't asking God to take any action, then it's just absolutely meaningless rhetoric; they may as well just say, "I hope you change your mind".

I think it's more along the lines of 'pray for god to make me realize the truth'... but then these same people also say "It is your job to realize the truth... not His to make you realize it."

Yeah, so that's asking him to either give you some evidence which he's currently hiding, or else take over your agency and make your decisions for you. Either way that's pretty stupid.

Even if God came down right now, in whatever form it may be, I'm not going to worship it just because it exists. That's an entirely different matter. It needs to convince me why worship is ever a worthwhile idea, and specifically why it's worthy or worship. Sure, it could presumably just take control of me and make me worship it if it wants. What an amazingly pointless victory that would be.

My biggest issue with religious people is that they have problem with everybody and they feel entitled to exhort you with their bronze age morality and rules for living.

I want the gal in the red dress to say at the end "we realize that but nobody cares".

Set boundaries with your friends. Limits are good for any relationship and if you value your friends, the boundaries you set will go a long way in maintaining that friendship.

I do have boundaries with them. But unfortunately, not disrespecting my country is not a boundary they are ready to set, because they simply don't understand how I can compare that to boundaries about respecting religion.

First of all, my condolences for the loss of your Dodos.

But I'm wondering if you are really rabidly patriotic or you just don't appreciate outsiders dissing what you are happy to diss yourself with fellow insiders? Personally I have a low regard for patriotism as such since the place we are born is an accidental kind of thing and even a little reflection will reveal that others probably have similar feelings about the place where they were born.

Well, I think a majority of the people hating on USA aka the country I mentioned in the original post, are actually a little jealous of the power the US has on a global scale, and they're not ready to admit that even to themselves. But I do also think there are several good reasons because of which people dislike it, it's not a perfect country by any measure, but in my very biased opinion it's one of the best, and deserves a better rep. But as long as they're not directly harming Americans physically or mentally, I couldn't care less. 

One school shooting a week. Do you seriously think anyone's jealous of that?

The US isn't even in the top 10, let alone the best.

I agree, and we see similar kinds of reactions from many theists here. They take criticism or mockery of ideas as an attack on them as a person. In contrast, I wouldn't take personally the mockery of any idea I held to be true or important. I also wouldn't care, especially when the mockery held no merit.
