Yea it was a bait line I admit.

But months ago, after I moved in, a sub contractor for my cable company left an expensive telescopic poll at my house. It is used to drag the cable under the house so the worker doesn't have to crawl under the house. The subcontractor guy FINALLY picked it up today. I cant believe how long it took because I called my cable company several times since he left it here. Turned out the device he left cost $300 bucks. 

Bad protocol on communication. Someone calls your business up, and you are using a sub contractor, tickets are used to track where you go. They should have been back to pick the tool up latest the next day.

Last year I had a entire bedroom suite appear on my front step, blocking the entrance. The address was "Love Lane", and I live on "Loveland", with the same house number. I called UPS and they said they'd send a truck around. Three more calls in the next three days. I was ready to have it all hauled off when I decided to look at a map. The correct address is less than a mile away. I drove over there and accosted the man in the front yard.

"Did you guys order a bedroom?"

"Yeah, how'd you know?"

"It's on my front porch. And it won't be there much longer."

He came scooting over and loaded it all up. He acted like it was my fault, but the center-punched silhouettes in the window helped him make a sound decision.

Evidently UPS GPS puts "something" ahead of "nothing".

They wouldn't give me the name, and I couldn't remember it anyway. They kept telling me they'd call and take care of it.

I am not that mean. I lost an expensive kitchen sanitation book required by the health department. I got fired for it (not the real reason, but I do live in a right to fuck the employee state.) Ended up finding it a couple months later and returned it despite being fired. The real reason they fired me is because I didn't want to move up to cook. It wasn't about the book at all, it was about the greedy owner wanting to save money on labor.

We live in a climate where workers are far too much put under pressure to get things done faster, so I can see him missing it. 

It is the Company's property, not the employees. Maybe the company should give the employee the time and resources to slow down so they don't end up in those situations.

I can remember back in the 1980s stories about how crappy Russian made cars were. The factory workers would put wires wherever they could and not always in the same place. 

The sub contractors were not trained to even dig and bury the cable like the cable company employees are, so I still have my cable laying on top of my lawn and wont risk mowing it right now until the cable company sends their own crew to bury it.

It isn't about being mean. It's about holding these people accountable for the company property. If they can't be bothered to come and retrieve their property after a very reasonable 30 day period of time, then it's obviously not important enough for them to worry about.

Can you imagine if you had 10 contractors leaving large items that cluttered up your property, at your residence for more than a month? What if the neighbors decided to report you for unkempt property and you got fined for it? I don't think telling the company that they lose the right to claim their crap if it isn't gone in 30 days, is being mean at all. It's being reasonable.

Furthermore, perhaps some additional employee accountability, such as docking one's pay for misplacing valuable company equipment, would teach employees not to leave a job site until they have done a walk-through to make sure they aren't forgetting anything.

Some people should get a pass in this world, based on certain circumstances. Some shouldn't. If a company is paying you to do a job, that job should include not leaving valuable company property behind. It's called being responsible and it's what we, as adults are expected to be when we get paid for doing a job we are hired to do.

How in the world do we expect the next generation to act responsible if we gloss over important values like personal accountability? Sadly, we are raising a generation of spoiled, entitled brats who think that they don't have to be responsible for anything they do because we bubble wrap their sensitive little feelings so that they aren't traumatized. This has been going on since the 90's and look at how the kids now in their 20's are behaving. Many seem to think that mommy or daddy will come along and clean up the mess because that's how they've been raised to think. I saw a lot of this while I was in beauty school.

In my line of work, I am responsible for bringing certain equipment to the job. Many salons provide a vast majority of the tools needed for a stylist to do the job, but shears and sometimes, clippers, aren't part of that. Can you imagine how long I would stay employed if I constantly forgot my own tools? Or if I was sent to a clients house, and I left expensive tools behind?

I own 4 pairs of shears. Two I got from school, the other two I got after graduation. The newer pairs both cost $600 each. You bet your sweet ass I'm making sure I have all of my tools with me when I leave a place. If I have to hold myself accountable, so should everyone else who has a job.

I agree, but that accountability to provide conditions to do that is important.

If a owner constantly cuts corners, just like COAL ASH, GENEX or even Wells Fargo, mistakes and even criminal acts will happen.

It is bullshit to always blame the employee. 

I have empathy for him leaving it here, because I saw the SPEED as to which he was working, and I have seen that rush far too much in even the places I worked at in my lifetime. 

Stop siding with the owner all the time. 

If the owner is not willing to provide the time and materials to the worker, they have NO FUCKING BUSINESS being shocked if something goes wrong.

Given that I personally have never seen a cable guy or any other utility worker have a set time limit for the work they do, it really isn't up to us to infer that there is a time limit. Besides, you are missing the bigger point. Time limits aside - they clearly could have sent someone back to your residence inside of 30 days to retrieve the valuable item. And clearly it's caused you some distress, otherwise you wouldn't be bitching about it here. So it has bothered you to a point past what is reasonable for the company to have left the item there.

But I digress, Brian. Sometimes I think you make reasonable points. Other times I think you just want to argue with people because you're in a mood and you just want to find something to complain about even when a logical point has been made that's not necessarily in your favor.

Pick your battles, man.
