We left our house in the care of a good friend who accidentally let my younger daughter's cat out while we were on vacation. One of the neighbors who didn't like us decided to poison the cat. We had only been back from vacation for three days when the cat started convulsing and all her organs started shutting down. Our only course of action was to have her humanely euthanized because at that point, she had literally lost 13 pounds and there was no chance of saving her.
This traumatized my daughter. Never again. We always make sure doors are immediately shut and locked. Screens are regularly checked in all windows and we do what we have to in order to make sure our babies don't get out.
And did you seek recompense from the prick?
No because we couldn't prove who did it. I had my suspicions though. We were out of the state when it happened, so the asshole got away with it.

Dogs have masters, cats have staff.
Bingo lolly. I read a popular science article some years ago which made a pretty convincing case that a dog will view you as a parent, while the best you can hope for from a cat is that they view you as a sibling.

All the cats we have currently are indoors only. Of the current batch, all are feral rescues.
If the indoor cats would eat lady bugs and box elder bugs I'd be thrilled.
We had a cat in the 80s that would dig up, kill, and leave on the doorstep any mole he discovered in the lawn. I really miss that one . . .

My cat doesn't go outside. She's made runs out the door before, but we caught her and brought her back inside. She may pretend to be fierce, but she wouldn't survive out there on her own.

My cats stop trying for the doors when they fail enough times. The twins have been "outside", into the garage, exactly once.

Ours go out when we are home and awake in the daytime. They have really happy and healthy lives. I don't judge people for keeping their cats indoors and understand why. I think our cats are just happier being able to explore. One of them we rescued from a lab. He sits in the yard and gazes out at the huge big world, full of bugs. It makes me happy to see him so happy.
