In a word: "Desperation".

Better to have socially acceptable religious desperation kept inside, maybe. Maybe some people would lose their mind without religion.

I agree DVF; desperate. But for what? Living forever fills me with dread, living forever in "god spa" fills with with even more dread; there are only so many angelic pedicures I could take. Still I would never have that problem.

Maybe some lose their mind with religion as well though.
