I remember when you only had to dial 5 numbers to call someone local on the telephone.
Then it was 7 numbers for a while, and then you had to add the area code.

And the following may come in handy if you should ever find yourself in medieval Europe:
4 farthings = 1 penny
5 pennies = 1 groat
5 groats = 1 shilling
2 shillings = 1 florin
2 florins = 1 ducat
2 ducats = 1 silver mark
5 silver marks = 1 sovereign
And from 1970 onwards, my father did nothing but bitch about decimalization.

Pay close attention to Cheryl Ladd's character in the opening of Charlie's Angles. Yep, that is how telephone switchboards used to work.

I remember party lines for the telephone, four lane highways were almost non existent, used the outhouse, neither set of grandparents had bathrooms, you were lucky if you could receive 3 TV channels, gas was 29 cents a gallon, bread a nickle a loaf and a penny could buy a kid a number of things.

I remember when milk was delivered directly to our house.
I remember when gasoline was 33 cents a gallon, and you could buy a new Volkswagon Beetle for $2000.
I remember when The Flintstones first appeared on TV.
I remember when cars didn't have seat belts.
I remember buying 45 RPMs of Beatles' songs when they first came out.
I remember when Pong was a cool video game.
I remember standing in lines at banks to withdraw money, before ATMs.
I remember standing in long, slow lines at grocery stores when prices had to be punched into cash registers, before scanners.
I remember when the engineering department got its first two computer terminals connected to the mainframe. All the engineers in the room had to share them.

Anywhere above Brisbane had only the local tv and the ABC.
You southerners were miles ahead of us.
The first tv we had after 10pm was in 88 and it was rage.

But not at that time. Automatic switching was ubiquitous then.

You'd be surprised how many companies/businesses, as they still do today, still refuse to update or adapt because of costs.
It would not surprise me if places were still using manual switchboards even in the 1970s, maybe not many, but still.
