Do you wish there's a god?
March 20, 2019 at 3:28 am
When the sun rises over the good and the bad
and the rain pours on the righteous as well as the wicked,
wouldn't you wish there's a god?
Besides all ideas about the creator being a wicked psychopath
wouldn't you wish for a loving god?

No! I don't! I prefer my freedom over forced "love"!

I think that to want a being supreme to yourself, with your eternal destiny in it's hands, is actually a sign of how brainwashed you are.
It's normal to not want a god.
Really, it is. :-)

Well, that depends how you define 'a loving god' . That is most definitely not the way I would describe the god of the Jewish or Christian faiths.
To use an Australian vulgarity, YHWH of the old testament is a dead cunt. A perfect illustration of my belief that all religions reflect the society which invents them. He is petty, jealous, vindictive ,capricious, petulant and ineffably cruel.. He allows unspeakable evil and inflicts the most disgusting suffering upon his creation.
The god of the New Testament is a bit more sophisticated, but every bit as much a monster as the god of the Jews. He still allows great evil and threatens his children with unspeakable suffering if they decline to love him. How can that possibly be called 'free will', when practising it causes endless suffering? That's called 'Hobson's choice'.
MY god would be one of infinite compassion and forgiveness. MY god would not threaten or punish , he would simply love and forgive, unconditionally, and accept us warts and all. ---MY god would be beyond the absurd notion that a finite being could possibly offend an infinite one.
So, to answer your question. Keeping in mind what's on offer, I think I'll pass.

I think you'll see from the replies that people here focus their not-belief on a very specific image of God. Basically a naive literalist reading of the early Old Testament.
Though people are adamant that their not-belief extends to all the different images of God people have believed in, this is the one that they talk about. What William Blake called Nobodaddy. It doesn't matter that no theologian has ever agreed with that view.
Sometimes it seems as if people formed a view of the Christian God when they were about 12 years old, decided it was bad, and stopped believing. It doesn't occur to them that a 12-year-old might not have the most well-informed judgment.
I'm curious of your own view of this. Is there a way for you to describe your thoughts about what God is in a way that wouldn't require as many pages as Thomas Aquinas wrote? People here will insult you no matter what you say, so in that sense any reaction will be the same. But I'm curious.

I don't 'wish' for anything. Why? Because I'm not a child.

You're the most interesting poster I've met here so far. Some here would benefit listening to your sound judgement.

Wishing for something doesn't make it true, no matter how much you wish there is a god there won't be one.
Sometimes it seems as if people formed a view of the Christian God when they were about 12 years old, and based their whole life on that god and can't imagine a life without it. It doesn't occur to them that a 12-year-old might not have the most well-informed judgment. As an adult gods are ridiculous.
I have a great life, love, and try to be part of group of people striving to make this planet a better place. What do I need any type of god for?
