Your point of living?
#41
RE: Your point of living?
I find this a common theme, the idea that belief about afterlives somehow affects the reality of them. More than that, it’s as if it’s being suggested that reality will split in half to accommodate both beliefs at once. People who believe in afterlives carry on living, because they believed in them; and the rest of us don’t, because we didn’t. That’s a very weird principle that I don't think anyone would apply in any other situation.

The only way this could reasonably work is if there’s some afterlife-granting genie whose sole criteria is the belief in said afterlife. Well, sure. You can come up with a convoluted scenario for anything.

I really don't understand this question coming from a Christian.

For most Christians, their theology basically claims this lief is just a 70 year place to wipe your feet while waiting for the real life that comes after. What is your point in living this life, if the real life doesn't start until after you die? What is your motivation?

My motivation for living is probably most of the same things that really motivates you; my love for family, friends, art, music, nature, surfing, good food, etc, etc.

Quote:It's almost as if you never existed in the first place because you'll forget you'll ever existed, thus you'll forget about anything that made you happy in life and any good moments in life. You can "make the best of it" while you're "here on Earth" for these "rare 80 [only if you're lucky] years", but in the end it won't matter. Most people won't leave behind a legacy, and even if you left one behind, it won't last long. Even famous luminaries like Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley will be forgotten sooner than later.

Yeah, that's reality. Get used to it.

I'd much rather believe the 'harsh' truth, than a comforting delusion.

Quote:Your contributions to humanity won't matter either because humanity will end, and life on Earth will be wiped out by a meteor in a few centuries from now or even sooner. If that doesn't happen, humans will go extinct anyway by robots.

Yep. And the universe would go on operating exactly like it currently is. Our ending would not even be noticed in the universe.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Some day there will be no trace of Humanity and its Gods, Goddesses, Religions, Philosophy etc. I see nothing special in this. As for the purpose, it's up to you to define it. You can do it by yourself or let others do it for you. The latter is easier but don't be surprised if you get scammed.

I live for my family.   What's the problem?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I had no problem with the first 13.whatever billion years before my arrival. Doubt I’ll care for the following 13.whatever billion years after my passing. So what?

I’m gonna enjoy my lil blip in time while I can.

Joe90, I have several very serious questions for you.
  • Why is someone else's concept of meaning important to you?
  • What do you hope to achieve by misrepresenting atheism as a "meaningless" philosophy?
  • Do you really think that "Oh, I need a god to have meaning in my life" is a strength rather than a weakness?
Even if you did manage to convince me that my life had no meaning at all, I would not suddenly start to believe in gods, and I would absolutely not, under any circumstances adopt Christianity as my new worldview because I see it as craven, immoral and fatally flawed.

I am here now. For a finite time.
Might as well do what I love for the reasons and people that I love, while I'm here.

Life owns me nothing. And I have so much.

I really enjoy life to it's fullest after I'm gone I really wont care, as for your diatribe maybe you tell us your fate is the same as ours.

RE: Your point of living?
Just found another reason to live: To try my hand at Tiny Cooking

That's a real, tiny little chicken pot pie made in real, tiny little kitchen with real, tiny little utensils.
Brilliant!

Oh, and I'm also pretty pumped about finally being ready to get a new betta. I'll be cycling a brand-new 10 gallon tank beforehand in order to provide an optimal habitat for my future arrival. My previous handsome betta genius died and I didn't have the heart to keep my old set-up.

Anyway, I plan on getting a violet Veiltail like the fella pictured below if I can find one:

I wish I could fishnap this one actually, because whoever's taking care of it seems to be doing a shit job.
It's color isn't very vibrant and it appears to have fin rot. Smh... Dodgy

Okay, enough rambling. I can't get started talking about betta fish because I will never fucking stop.

On with the thread!
