Even a "direct" sale of a custom or new gun is funneled through a licensed dealer, the consumer then picks it up.

Frankly, I'd trust an actual direct sales model more than the one we have. The manufacturers aren't the bad faith parties here so far as we can tell. That'd be unlicensed John Q Hobbyists, followed by registered dealers (and the latter problem is directly attributable to the intentional defunding of the atf's compliance arm).

We do something similar here, our gun policies seem to be microtargeted, lol. Even as the party of guns seeks to loosen restrictions for loyalists, it strengthens prohibitions for people that just so happen to be dissidents from their point of view. Ultimately asserting that if The Wrong People™ try to use them, The Right People™ will knock them down with bigger and better guns.

Ammo availability is becoming an issue for my bolts already.

Speaking of, there's a potential route for restrictive legislation that can work.  If you want to reduce the amount of rounds a person can send downrange, screwing with his mags won't do shit, whereas setting a possession limit on ammo outside of a range will.  They are hazardous materials, after all.  Perhaps they should require an endorsement or licensing beyond some threshold (and ofc there can be site-specific or chambering exemptions).

No deal on ammo limitations.  The right to bear arms is not about hunting.

Out of that whole list, only vetting and waiting periods have life beyond your simple anti-corporate quick fix fantasies.  

We already have vetting and waiting lists for the class of firearm so massively represented in trace data, though, and it doesn't seem to work.  Why, do you imagine, is that?  Could it possibly be that the owners are not acting in as good a faith as manufacturers, dealers, and resellers?

If you keep asking me what would work, I have addressed this countless times in multiple threads.

1. STOP MAKING THEM LIKE CANDY.

2. STOP HANDING THEM OUT LIKE CANDY

3. Neither #1 or #2 means a ban on all firearms.

4. The industry needs to stop marketing fear, just like oil companies need to face global warming.

5. Vetting at time of sale matters. None of this bullshit "no record means Roy Rogers will ride off in the sunset riding a unicorn".

6. WAITING PERIOD!.... An honest person should not flip out if they want to buy a firearm and wait a week to pick it up.

7. You don't need a handgun or long gun that is high capacity or rapid fire.

8. You don't need to collect firearms like a stamp collector, or Star Trek, or MLB fan. It is a FUCKING WEAPON not a toy.

The industry , NOT OWNERS, but the INDUSTRY has used the same bullshit marketing big tobacco used, that oil still uses.

The biggest problem with firearms has never been the owners, but the CEOs and their fear marketing. FEAR SELLS and that is why nothing gets done.
