With such easy access to firearms, why isn't Israel's suicide rate much higher than Japan's?
Could it POSSIBLY be that there is no correlation between firearm ownership and suicide rates? (Unlike what the anti- gun crowd has been spewing for years).
It has been sayed for a lot of times already, it is not that guns make people want to commit suicide, it is about the easiness of commiting suicide using a gun.
If you really want to have a discussions about this using statistics, you should use statistics about failure rate. And even then it is clear that using a gun to commit suicide has a higher rate of succes than let's say hanging.
I only know one person (personally) who offed themself with a firearm. I know two people who did it (a 15 year old girl - neighbor and a 35 year old housewife) - by sticking their head in a plastic bag.
Seems there's more plastic bags than guns...

This is why they’re going to ban our guns, OLB.
Your arguments, themselves, don’t instill confidence in your ability to be trusted with a firearm. I’m sure they don’t accurately represent you, as a person with a functioning brain who can be trusted with a firearm, more so than most firearm owners even.....
.......but who’s fault is that?
OTOH, maybe they do. Maybe you are a trolling rabble rouser with a gun, out to trigger the libs.....and who ever heard of that sentence ending in misery, right?
I really can’t stress enough to my fellow pro gun types....these rights are ours to lose. It’s not prudent to say and do things that contribute to their loss. All we have to do is not be a bunch of crazy assholes, police our own.

I don’t think so. While suicide is a terrible occurrence, I don’t think that our best efforts (and considerable political capital required) should be wasted on keeping people who want to die alive.
Children, maybe...but since kids “can’t” get guns cap laws and enforcement of their existing analogs would seem a better target to cut down on suicides, school shootings, accidents involving children, people mistakenly shooting their so in a perceived home invasion, etc.
Focus on the ones that want to live, and the ones who can’t be given leeway to make such decisions for themselves, first. I know, two things at once.....still....we might really need to take this in baby steps considering how poor our efforts to date have been.
If someone broke their leg and it was hurting so badly that they wanted to die, would you waste the money fixing them?
Maybe if the leg was fixed, they wouldn't want to die anymore.
And maybe if we got better at fixing legs, it wouldn't be so expensive in the future.

Well, I don’t think that a broken leg is a great comparison to suicide, but....fundamentally, I allow for the possibility that taking one’s own life at least can be s decision we don’t have much business meddling in.
Mass shootings, and shooting other people in general are certainly not the same as suicide....and understanding how difficult it will be to solve that issue, I think that we should probably focus on that issue.
There’s some crossover in anticipated effects of solutions to mass shootings and people shooting people, and suicide s, ofc.
If the idea is to reduce gun death, well, reducing suicide will hit the largest portion on gun death....but probably won’t do much ( if anything) for mass shootings or shootings in general.
