Maher/Corden and obesity

But when it comes to comedians isn't this their usual schtick: they're grumpy, they're against everybody, gawd forbids they choose a political side (ok I know this doesn't include Maher) and they just shit and take less popular sides just so they can aggravate people. I mean look what Dave Chappelle said recently; or I watched little bit of new Bill Burr special and right away he has a shtick how he wishes to go to feminist meeting and yell derogatory stuff at women - I mean who would have this kind of need for real? He's just playing the annoying comedian schtick. And I also heard him mock fat people on like Conan o'Brien.

There are many thoughtful comedians, but there are definitely those that push the buttons for the sake of it. I try to remember that when I see a comedian completely fucking missing the point of the MeToo movement. I mean, they don't miss the point. They're just making jokes about it. Also, if you make fun of fat people in a way that's actually cleverly comedic, I'm still going to laugh. I'm a "no one's exempt" person when it comes to comedy. However . . . it has to be clever. You can't just shit on people to get a laugh. You've got to find a play on words or situations that makes me look at it in a humorous way. Let's take for example Andrew Dice Clay. He sucked. He wasn't clever. He was just loud, stupid and sexist.

This has gotten so insane that people now actually defend being obese.

Since when is calling obesity a bad thing "shaming" someone? If you're fat, you're not as healthy as you could be. Period. There's no debate here.

I'm not suggesting we make fun of or purposefully embarrass fat people, but why can't we even discuss obesity without being called "fat-shamers?" That is just ridiuclous.

Shame is a legitimate emotion and maybe if you're so heavy that you get out of breath walking up a flight of stairs, you should be taking actions in your life to lose weight, not calling out every person who criticizes obesity.

America is the only country where almost half the adults can be so overweight that they're considered obese and instead of people seeing THAT as the problem, they choose to see the people who criticize obesity as the problem. Lmao what a joke.

Sugar is a huuuuuuge issue nowadays. Everyone seems to worry about fats and calories, which DO make a difference if you aren’t careful, but sugar-rich foods are packed with easily available energy and we tend to eat far more of it than we should. And what’s worse, it’s extremely addictive!

I cut out soda, fruit juices except coconut water, and while I’m not militant about it, I try to limit my sweets. If I want something sweet, I’ll try to reach for nature’s candy, some fruit, instead of candy. I’ve lost several pounds and feel much better. Just gotta exercise more, otherwise I’m healthier than I’ve been in a while! I still treat myself to chocolate or icecream, but ever since I’ve started these dietary changes, the urge to eat things that are sugary and full of empty calories has waned tremendously. Too much will even make me feel sick!

I think we as a society need to learn to limit ourselves, and recognize just how addictive sugar is. As the ol’ saying goes, moderation is key!

Sugar is such a huge problem and so fucking addictive I hate it. However, I force myself to drink pop in moderation. I love Coca-Cola and I doubt I'll ever stop drinking it, but I have to limit myself to a couple cans a week. Then again, I also drink a gallon of water a day, so I view the Coke as a reward for staying hydrated and generally eating healthily.

Salt and fat aren't that big of a deal either, in my opinion, if you're eating right. There are varying views on the issue but I think the most important thing to focus on is calories eaten versus calories burned. Eat healthy foods and exercise daily no matter what. Even if you don't exercise, just get good, healthy, whole foods into your body every day. Eggs, spinach, chicken, seafood, maybe some red meat here and there. Bread and pastas are the hardest things to avoid for me. It's just carbs and sugar: totally terrible for you. But, like I said there are so many varying views on food and nutrition and diet that I think each person just have to find what works for them, which can be tough.

And that's the thing, I get it. Food is addictive, and it's honestly hard to kick bad food habits. I used to be a heavy set guy. I chose to lose the weight. Doesn't make me better than anyone; the point is if I can do it anyone can. It's a choice. And honestly, I had to deal with a lot of my issues with depression before I could get the energy to get up and start working out. But once I started working out, I felt even better. That's the thing, if you choose to lose the weight, you'll feel better, look better and have a better life, nine times out of ten. I wish more people would see this as a positive message rather than an attempt at "shaming" fat people.

That doesn't mean, however, that we shouldn't discuss or expose the problems around the obesity epidemic and it certainly doesn't mean we should say it's okay to be obese. It is okay in that if you want to make that life choice and risk heart disease, diabetes, cancer, bone & joint disease and high blood pressure, then fine. It's your life, do what you want to yourself. But realize and accept the fact that you are doing something bad to your body and we shouldn't be crucified for discussing that.

That's 100% not what's happening here. No one here or in the video complained about people being called obese or obesity being considered unhealthy.

There you go. You're onto the real discussion now. . .

Shit. Straaawwmmmaaaaaannnnn.

Yes, that is what's happening. Did you even see the full video of Maher talking about this? The whole "fat shaming" line was one small part of a much larger conversation about obesity and healthcare.

Please explain how that's a straw man. That's literally what tons of people do now. They cry fat-shaming as soon as obesity is even brought up.

PLEASE enlighten me.

I think you are missing the point.

Watch the whole video. Maybe you still think it's not funny, or a bit mean-spirited, but what do you expect from Maher? It doesn't change the legitimacy of what he's saying.

I've never seen a more useless phrase than "literally tons of people"

Or maybe you did truly literally mean it, fat-shamer.

I honestly cannot say the last time someone that was considered "obese" ruined my day/month/year.

Smokers, on the other hand, ruin just about any outdoor experience I have. They directly impact my health and the health of my small children.

Isn't Bill Maher a smoker? He can climb down from his high-horse.
