JERUSALEM (AP) - With just days left before a court-imposed deadline to reform Israel's military draft law expires, the nation's political leaders are at loggerheads on how to resolve what has become perhaps the country's most pressing - and divisive - domestic issue.

The impasse over whether and how to scrap the mass exemptions from military service for ultra-Orthodox Jews has already cost Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu his largest coalition partner. With no obvious compromise in sight ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline, the issue has the potential to trigger the government's collapse and lead to snap elections.

The debate over the exemptions cuts along the nation's secular-religious divide. Israel's secular majority, which is required to perform two to three years of compulsory service, widely resents the exemptions, while ultra-Orthodox leaders have been equally adamant in their refusal to compromise, claiming their young men serve the nation through prayer and study.

Young Israelis Held in Attack on Arabs

JERUSALEM — Seven Israeli teenagers were in custody on Monday, accused of what a police official and several witnesses described as an attempted lynching of several Palestinian youths, laying bare the undercurrent of tension in this ethnically mixed but politically divided city. A 15-year-old suspect standing outside court said, “For my part he can die, he’s an Arab.”

The police said that scores of Jewish youths were involved in the attack late Thursday in West Jerusalem’s Zion Square, leaving one 17-year-old unconscious and hospitalized. Hundreds of bystanders watched the mob beating, the police said — and no one intervened.

Two of the suspects were girls, the youngest 13, adding to the soul-searching and acknowledgment that the poisoned political environment around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has affected the moral compass of youths growing up within it.

You cannot put a dog and a cat in a cage and expect them to get along. I'm fairly certain that this attack will be retaliated soon enough. It's the same around here, fellows, ethnic tension.
Obviously, each side has arguments which seem to be legit to an outsider. In such cases, only violence can determine the winner. Now we are just seeing that.

As a Yeshiva University alumnus and a psychotherapist who works with abused children, I was horrified to learn that my alma mater was apparently involved in a 30-year cover-up of sexual abuse that affected hundreds of children and protected known abusers. Y.U. — an institution to which I am grateful for making me who I am today — also has refused to commit to releasing to the public details of its investigation into these abuses

TEL AVIV — Superland, an Israeli amusement park, is a land of separation. Last week Khaled Shakra, a school teacher, called the park’s front desk to set up a visit for his students. At first the receptionist proposed three dates, but when he said the school was from Jaffa, an Arab city, there was a silence. Shakra was put on hold and then told that the dates he had just been offered were already taken. An hour later he called again pretending to be a teacher from a Jewish school, and the dates were free.
