As others said buy an older one. A friend of mine got a good deal on one console online with some 30-40 games. Don't recall what console it was, but the kid loved it. (It came with GTA, but he put that one on hold until he is older).
I told my nephew that I'd sell him my nintendo 64 with 12 games for 25 euros. He saved money from his allowance and we made the deal. Of course after that, behind his back i gave my sister the money back for her to put in his saving account. It's good to teach kids to save money for things they want for entertainment. He loves the console and when I go over there we have a blast with Mario Kart.

To buy an overpriced new console with 1 or 2 games way too advanced for a 12 y.o? No. By the time the kid really games, he will want the new playstation 6 or 7 lol.

In my experience, if you hand a kid a ball, he'll find a way to play Fortnight with it.
If was gonna buy another console....I'd buy a Switch. Bought one when they came out, and another just last christmas because the kids wouldn't stop fighting over the one they had.

I started mine off on a 2DS. A Switch is good if you want to pay bit more.

Dont buy him an old console, his friends will all be playing on the new console and a lot of todays games are played multiplayer online. I would ask your kid which one he wants because I guarantee he is going to want what his friends got so he can play the games with them.

If he has a handful or so of friends, he doesn't need online video games.

First, I must praise you and say that you two have made the right decision. Most parents buy their children a console when they are too young for that. Most of them do not understand the rules of the games and it becomes very boring for them after a short time. At 12 years old, the kids are old enough to play any game. Even the games that have complicated rules will not be a big problem....
As far as game consoles are concerned, I would suggest you to buy Microsoft Xbox 360 Core (here is a link where you can take a closer look https://productz.com/en/microsoft-xbox-3...me-console ). Trust me, you can not be wrong with this console. Your kid will love it. I don't want to write about the characteristic here, it will take me half a day. For this reason, you should visit the link mentioned above.

Tell that to the kid when all of his friends are playing a game together and he cant because he is playing on a console from 7 years ago. A console gaming system is not a necessity for any age but if your making the decision to get one, dont get him something obsolete and get him something he can enjoy for the next 7 years.
