The OP has a posting history here that we all have access to, I don't know why some of us want to pretend this wasn't just another opportunity to denigrate people different from "us".

I have re-read the OP.  The case for bigotry remains weak.

From the article:

Quote:But in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city, mosques were crowded as a religious scholar told his congregation via loudspeaker: "We are not too weak to let this one virus empty our mosques."

OLB was referring to people who crowd together in mosques, not to Pakistanis in general, not even to religionists in general.

Boru

Are you being disingenuous? Or you this dense?

Here it is again:

Quote:So most people with sense are maintaining a bit of distance from others to slow the spead of C19.

BUT - not in Pakistan.

Bigotry doesn't mean someone has to explicitly say they're bigots. Or even be aware that they're being a bigot. Or have AF consensus that they are.

So let's be clear about one thing here:

This failure to comply with government demands is a people problem, a problem with human nature. Not a Pakistani or Muslim or religion problem. People of all sorts and stripes have been guilty of this, not just in Pakistan but in countries like the USA and Australia and elsewhere.

Why do you not understand that the post was an example of people ignoring the concept of social distancing?

The 'bigotry' on this thread comes from two members and is laser-focused on OLB.  This wouldn't be a shitting yourself issue is another member had posted the story.

Enjoy the butthurt.

People do stupid and dangerous things for different reasons, like those teens in Florida who are doing similar things because they are horny, but this is atheism forum where we discuss mostly problems caused by religion. So if you have problems with that maybe you shouldn't come here because this is mostly how it was and how it will be.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Jesus fuck, people really are this blind or maybe OLB is your friend and you need to defend him at all costs, I don't know.

The OP was an emphasis on Pakistan. He didn't state it as just an example. This is you and Boru doing that spin.

It would be just as moronic if it was the Westboro Baptist church and that lot of nutsacks.

But - that wasn't what I heard on NPR.

Sorry if that doesn't.fit your skewed view of reality.

Yeah, you read an article and found something to confirm a negative belief you've had regarding countries like Pakistan then came here to post about it.

OP for the third time:

Quote:So most people with sense are maintaining a bit of distance from others to slow the spead of C19.

BUT - not in Pakistan.

OP didn't say "not the case with some people in Pakistan" but "not in Pakistan".

Valkyrie, there's a world of difference between criticizing a subset of fellow privileged citizens for bad behavior and what the OP was stating. The OP could have made a general thread about the woes and evils of large gatherings in light of this crisis, but no ... he had to come post here about Pakistan specifically instead.

Actually, lately OLB has said some things, especially lately, that I didn't really care for.  I just didn't decide to make it my soap box.

I suppose his 'sin' is one of omission because he didn't s p e l l I t o u t f o r y o u in terms you can understand that he was sharing an example of specific group of people going against the suggestions made by governments, medical professionals, and scientists.  Had it been a Catholic mass in my hometown in Iowa, he could have pointed out they were in Iowa and I could have gotten all riled up that he was bashing all Iowans.

Get over your delicate little self.

It's nice to see that in these unsettled times you have your butthurt for enjoyment.

I know you talk about some people in America being idiots. But ... you also made this thread as well, where you singled out Pakistan as a big bad culprit behind the worsening of this crisis, ignoring several other examples in other countries such as the USA. Your excuse was "that's the first one I saw in the news" so all the more reason to think you weren't just innocently stating an example among many.

One example in Australia, a beach got closed very recently because a large gathering of people were there despite the warnings not to gather in large numbers. And some people are still complaining about that, saying it's a "sacred" place for them and it shouldn't have been shut down. So here from examples like this, it seems more the issue that many people in general have a problem with having their freedoms being restricted (religious or otherwise), even when it's for the greater good (and especially if the threat isn't that clear to them anyway).

We get it.

All would have been fine if OLB had posted about every large gathering on the entire fucking planet that has happened since it became apparent that social distancing was the best way to try to lessen its impact.

Orrrrrr...if someone (nearly anyone) else had posted the link to the article.

Will you or Bri be claiming #Pakistanmatters?
