He neglected the most important duty of an roman emperor - not pissing off the praetorian guard.

He awarded the Praetorians with a well-deserved bonus for honorable duty and services rendered.

And praetorian guards signaled its gratitude by dragging his cowering uncle out of hiding to take his place.

This part of roman history is strange.  Usually king makers who made such a reluctant king as Claudius would remain the power behind the throne.   But it appears Claudius proved to be a well-liked as well as effective ruler who was able to master the praetorian guard and the legions.

The fact that he raised his barbarian Germanic body guards above the status of the praetorians, and he seems to enjoy insinuating the officers of his praetorians are homosexual because they can’t satisfy their wives probably raised their asking prices to beyond what he could possibly pay with money and favors.

The Senate didn’t kill him (they just didn’t do anything to stop it) - a faction of the Praetorian Guard killed him.
