I'm not sure where the discussion is right now, but in response to the OP, I oppose it based on personal bias.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

I used to shoot these (banana or golden orb spiders) out of trees when I was younger & meaner.
They can eat small birds & that one isn't even close to the largest one I've seen.

This is one of the many reasons I don't live in the southeastern US and I don't visit South America. Spiders were meant to be stepped on ... not run over with a truck, stuffed and hung over a goddamn mantle.

Venomous ≠ poisonous.

You ARE joking.
That's my perception, and is obvious to me,beginning with the corkscrew logic of the NRA. Eg "Guns don't kill people---" and a bloody minded insistence in misinterpreting the meaning of the US constitution about the right to bear arms.IE an armed citizen militia, which would have been appropriate in the eighteenth century, but is not today. Well that's according to the way I read it in the hard copy I have of the US constitution. I'm aware the interpretation is controversial, even among constitutional lawyers.
But hey, I'm an outsider, what do I know,it's only my opinion. I truly could not care less how many Americans blow each others heads of while insisting on their 'rights.'
A European writer observed a few years ago is that there is a the difference between American style democracy and most of the rest of the world; The US emphasises the rights of the individual, the rest of us emphasis equality.
Quote:For reasons passing all understanding, Americans refuse to equate gun crimes with guns" (Martin Sheen in " The American President")
That's all I have to say on this topic.I'm afraid I'll become the first atheist to have a fatwa put on his arse by other atheists.

Guns don't kill people. [Crazy] People with guns kill people.
Sane people... not so much. Guns should be restricted from those too irresponsible to use one properly.

I have no idea where the notion that taking a gun away from a person intent on murder is going to stop that person from committing murder. I'm a little tired of hearing the same old, "Let those Americans blow each other's heads off" argument, while people in "gunless" (for lack of a better term) societies are still running around stabbing each other, poisoning each other and bludgeoning each other. Fuck, a tool of murder is only a tool of murder in a murderer's hands. Let's not pretend that no one would die if we took away all the guns. Next, we should take away knives too and I don't want to hear any, "but, I need to cut my food."
Oh, and as far as citizen militia, you never know when a country will need one. Just because the government isn't leaning toward a dangerous dictatorship right now does not mean that it never will. If the law changes, there will be no guns with which to form a militia, if the need arises. You don't seriously think the men who wrote the U.S. Constitution meant for that right to disappear once there was an organized military, do you? Well, it is rather obvious that was not meant because there was an organized military when the Constitution was written.
