Part of me would love to see it happen just to give the Republcians a conniption. He at least has the credentials, but I doubt he'd accept the job.

Not a requirement. Other than being confirmed, there are NO requirements for serving on the US Supreme Court (which strikes me as kind of bizarre). John Marshall, William Rehnquist, Lewis Powell, Abe Fortas, Earl Warren, William Douglas, Felix Frankfurter, Louis Brandeis and Elena Kagen all had no prior judicial experience prior to sitting on the court.
