There is no justice...... RBG RIP!

This would obviously be a dirty trick by the Democrats but so what? The Republicans themselves firmly established a precedent for not confirming a justice in an election year. IMO, the Dems will be fools if they don't use whatever means are at their disposal to foil the Republicans in their bid for naked hypocrisy.

I saw this brought up on twitter too.

It could work if we were talking about Nixon's GOP and a base of GOP voters that would react like like Nixon's base at the time.

But tactically speaking we are not talking about a rational party or rational base.

With our current demographics right now, trying to impeach Trump a second time, knowing his support got him through the first impeachment, will only bee seen as revenge, and not law.

The only pragmatic option we have is to vote him out of office in November.

Trump’s base would be immaterial in a second impeachment, since the point would not be to remove him from office, but to stall the Senate confirmation of a new justice.

You’re probably right that it would be seen as revenge, but so what?

I am not arguing procedure, I am arguing public perception.

If Trump had Nixon's GOP and voter base, he would never have made it past the escalator when he announced his run.

I’m arguing public perception as well. Let it be seen as revenge. Who cares how a second impeachment is perceived by the public? Public perception - in this instance - counts for less than nothing.

And if Trump had Nixon’s support, he would have won in a landslide.

Yea, and that would kill Biden. This isn't about ethics for the GOP, but they have won far too many midterm and presidential elections by bating the sane into arguments like this. It is about the middle, moderates and swing states.

No, public perception got the orange fucker elected in the first place.

We already failed once trying to impeach him. Our best bet now is to vote him out in November.

Voting him out in November won’t stop the appointment of a conservative justice. Impeachment might.

Far less risky than attempting a second impeachment and losing, verses having the ability to expand the SCOTUS when Biden wins.

A second impeachment attempt will turn away moderate and swing voters. AGAIN, we are not dealing with Nixon's era here.

Wouldn't want to turn away anyone who wants universal healthcare just because they don't absolutely hate the idea of an ethnostate, now would we? Wink

Your guys impeached the president. They didn't attempt, and they didn't fail. Tell me more about how public perception is sabotaging your party. Theirs, or your own? Personally, I'm tired of being told by the american left that the only way to defeat fascism is by letting swing voters™ have just that little bit of fascism they prefer. There's an image problem you guys could solve - most direct route would be to stop doing that.

‘Losing the impeachment’ in this scenario means only ‘declining to impeach.’

If you impeach Trump a second time, he becomes the only US President to be such a disaster that he was impeached twice. And the Senate will be too busy with the impeachment to confirm Trump’s pick. Hold that thought.

If Trump wins the election and holds the Senate, his nominee will be confirmed but you’ve STILL got the win of impeaching him twice.

If Trump wins the election but loses the Senate, he’ll be forced to nominate someone the Democrats can live with.

If Biden wins the election but fails to take the Senate, you’ll probably have to learn to live with eight justices for some time. Not ideal, but not a disaster either.

If Biden takes the WH and the Senate, you’re home free.

There is literally no scenario in which impeaching Trump a second time is a total loss for Democrats. Even if The Wicked Witch Of The West made it onto the court, Democrats STILL win by impeaching Trump twice.

Thanks for explaining it, BrianSoddingBoru4.

Could I trouble you to explain it to the U.S. Democratic Party?
