Separation of Science and State

RE: Separation of Science and State
What about being united into a moral whole is unclear?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

It's unclear why you've constrained something as broad as religion into something so specific.

I didn't, that's durkeims definition of a religion . It's been widely employed for quite some time because it seems to capture the essence of what we mean when we use the term religion - and particularly because of it's hypothetical breadth as compared to other definitions of a religion.

But...to be clear...do you think that there's something wrong with durkheims definition of a religion - which you previously stated echoed your own position...., or are you unclear on how religion as defined by durkeim is incapable of avoiding normative statements?

How many times do I have to answer yes it's unclear before you make any attempt at elaborating?

Moral content is normative content. Being united into a moral whole is interchangeable with being united in a normative whole.

The normative content is the reason for our separation of church and state.

His definition dissociated church from religion. He stated that moral communities are called a Church. You're saying the moral community is the religion.

RE: Separation of Science and State
To be clear, no problem with his definition, and you do understand (at least now) why a religion (so defined) is not capable of avoiding normative statements?

As to the above, did it? Let's look again.

A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden–beliefs and practices which unite in one single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them.
