And, yes, I know Biker throws a hissy fit every time you try to put a label on his political views, and this particular video is less about the alt-right and more about conservatism in general (and a follow-up video is devoted to dissecting the history of conservative ideology from Edmund Burke on and how, even then, as the aristocracy fell, it was always about maintaining some semblance of social hierarchy far more than things like fiscal responsibility or small government.)

That said, Biker has jumped right out of the gate and started shouting that it’s not fair that burger flippers could make the same as people who work in Accounts Payable. And he’s not even considering that that scenario might actually be fair; that they both do long hours of work (even if one is manual and one is more cerebral) and now get the same amount of money to show for it. Yes, he’s pro-choice, he’s pro-legalizing weed, he thinks women should be able to do any job men can do, and he doesn’t vote. If anyone wants to know why I call Biker right-wing or conservative, just look at this thread.

Also, college degrees have kinda been useless in The job market for about a decade at this point.

And all we have to do is read your drivel to realize that you are a dumb kid who hasn't figured out money does not grow on trees.....

Nor have you learned the VALUE of education and experience..

In your goofy worldview - butchers and brain surgeons should be paid the same... All they do is stand around cutting meat....

Turning it back in, we can keep in mind that a college degree is still demonstrably profitable, it's just a longer term investment than it used to be.

That might apply to our speific example - because the difference between degree holders and non degree holders isn't so much to do with getting a job anymore as it is expected earnings over lifetime. So...supposing that over time a walmart greeter ends up making more money. That shifts the labor market top to bottom. A degree holder might not be making more than our future 15 an hour walmart greeter now - but there's every reason to expect that her lifetime earnings will increase in some relative pattern to the expected earnings of a non degree holder.

The initial shock might be insulting. I get that. It's happened to me many times in my life, watching other people get help. It's like this thing with loan forgiveness. That's gonna sting, lol. I payed as I went and never finished- to a great extent...because I just don't borrow money. Still, it's good for us. Good for me, too. If more people have more disposable income, I can grab a smaller bite of a bigger pie and make more money. That takes alot of pressure off.

I bought a discounted subscription to "The Economist," on Black Friday because it's a great magazine. Unfortunately, for some reason it's only readable on my tablet, which means I haven't touched it.

Long term, a greatly increased minimum wage would:

-Increase economic activity

-Lower production costs

-Lower tax expenditures

-Increase tax revenue

-Lower housing and medical costs

I only know this because that’s exactly what has happened every time and in every place  minimum wages have been increased. It seems as though the economic devastation we’re warned of EVERY SINGLE TIME a minimum increase is proposed is conspicuous by its absence.

In fact, the only arguments against requiring a living wage all seem to being either specious  or simply false.

-and with that in mind, and assuming that conservative economic principles are aimed at wealth generation - again I have to wonder whether this is a right left thing. It seems to me that conservative policies can be implemented with regards to increasing minimum wages, which we can agree is a desirable outcome and valid use of government resources and authority.

What else are they supposed to be for?

Correct me if I'm wrong, non-usians....but that is how conservatives in countries with aggressive minimum wage reform apply themselves...is it not? Not loons, mind you, conservatives? Minimizing the shock to markets while pursuing the goal of wealth generation and increased qol?

(December 17, 2020 at 11:10 am)onlinebiker Wrote: Minimum wage is political fellatio - bought by politicians - at someone else's expense.

The worst part of it - is all the people who get screwed - by giving "mo money" to burger flippers and latte slingers.

Example: My SO currently makes better than double the current minimum wage of $7.25 an hour - working accounts payable for a local family owned business. It's not great money - but it is pretty much the scale for such jobs in this area. She has a 4 year degree in accounting and 25 years experience.

Now along comes Joe Politician - ordering up the political blowjob - so he can score some votes by looking all "compassionate". Gotta get "mo money" to the little guy. Snap- bang - gee whiz -- the greeter at Walmart is making $15 an hour - less than 10 percent less of what my SO makes. Isn't that fucking great???

So why did she spend 4 years getting a degree??? Why did we do without fun toys and not take any vacations for the last 5 years - so we could pay off her student loans???

Gee -- they want to make college free too.....

So now my SO will essentially be a minimum wage worker. DON'T even go on with moronic drivel of "her employer will raise her wages too".....

Are you THAT FUCKING STUPID???? He will not raise her wages. He will FREEZE wages - probably for years - AND he will be forced to lay off some of the employees. Unlike the government - he can't just print up more money when he needs it. Sure - he can pass on some of the costs to customers by raising prices.... HEY - WELCOME TO INFLATION!!!!

ALL minimum wage does - is ensure there are more poor people. All at the bottom of the pay scale.

And you wonder why the rich keep getting richer.

I say if a business cant afford to pay a livable wage, then they shouldn't be in business in the first place. I am so fucking sick of assholes putting down workers and treating them as if all they deserve are crumbs.

I think that's the quiet part that no one wants to say. OTOH, if there's some business that can't make money unless it impoverishes it's labor or it's owners...but we still need that product - we apply subsidies. That's what we already do.

Again, what else are government resources and authority supposed to be for?
