Questions about the European renaissance and religion to non believers

Questions about the European renaissance and religion to non believers
1. Is religion natural to the Human psyche?

The renaissance is regarded and/or was regarded as a golden age. A age of prosperity, a better way of life or living, moving forward, great wealth, education, re-enlightenment, rebirth of ideas as well literature, great technological, artistic and engineering feats HOWEVER apon contemplation, when i think of the word renaissance, the word retarded or retarding comes to my mind. PLEASE note that I mean no offence to the mentally retarded, mentally disabled, making fun of them or being disrespectful nor am I talking about them.

2. If the renaissance really was a golden age then how was it truly golden and a age of moving forward if it was based on older ideas, older literature, A older way of life/living before the middle ages rather then new ones? Wouldn't that be backwards or a backwards way of living and doing things rather then moving forward's or the opposite of those?

3. If religion had not been a part of human society's or civilizations, what most likely would humans have been capable of and what would we be capable of doing today? Would technology, education, philosophy and government have progressed faster and less wars?

1. It’s better to think of ‘renaissance’ as meaning ‘rediscovery’.

2. Considering the (roughly) 1000 years between the end of the Classical World and the Renaissance, it was definitely a moving forward. That it was inspired in large part by the works of Classical thinkers is a good thing - everything builds on something else.

3. If religion had never existed, the progress of human civilization would have been much slower. A great many innovations have been made by religious people acting out of religious motives.

At work.

1) 'Yes' and 'No'. As in a myriad of religious ideas have been thought up. Built upon. Revamped, reworked, renamed or discarded or overwritten. There are also examples where it simply 'Hasn't been' in one or two groups/cultures.

The 'Renaissance' was more a 'Rediscovering' as Boru mentioned.

2) It is now labeled as a 'Golden age' compared to the centuries of, effectivly, backsliding into ignorance and true 'Barbarity' of its preceeding centuries. It's kind of a 'Relative' label we use today since Human's seem to want to do things like that. Put a name to everything. Put every idea/concept 'In a box'.

3) If the semi-industrialized Romans and or Persians and or Asian sphere (Some one more learned than I can hopefully expand on what was happening in the areas of 'Now-a-days' Korea, Japan, Chinese kingdoms, India et-al) had not collapsed/faded/self destructed? Then, yes, potentially technology might be 'Better' than today. Simply because there would not have been a few centuries of 'Game reset' going on.

Just my uneducated musings.

Cheers.

Probably, at least with respect to a very specific view of what religion is.  If you're wondering whether the contemporary religions are natural to the human psyche, no.  They're elaborate, novel, and brand new.

For some people it was great, for others, not so much.

The myth of the golden age.

Imagining humans without religion - which is a pretty big lift, I would expect us to do all the things we do and have done otherwise.  Religions don't make internal combustion engines work, and people with or without religions have the same need and use for engines - for example.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Maybe an intro first?
"For the only way to eternal glory is a life lived in service of our Lord, FSM; Verily it is FSM who is the perfect being the name higher than all names, king of all kings and will bestow upon us all, one day, The great reclaiming"  -The Prophet Boiardi-

Thankyou to all who responded, much appreciated. As thuhlu pointed out about the backsliding, now I can see how it would of been a more better era and moving forward

Well, no reason to go that far. We could have come up with even worse ideas. People are good at digging basements.
