Who said they made it up? ALL measurements involve a degree of uncertainty. As for the definitional aspect, the fact that some anthropologists disagree about how to classify Homo erectus doesn’t we shouldn’t take human prehistory seriously.

50 million years is a rounding error with the numbers they're working with, a second here or there in geologic time. A much less specific answer or a much wider range of error would have been a hell of an achievement as well.
