What Gives You Peace....
#11
RE: What Gives You Peace....
1. I don't know. I suspect not. My theory is that both being content and feeling unrest are necessary aspects of being human. The former consolidates current gains, while the latter prevents stagnation which is evolutionarily dangerous.

2. I find peace at the end of the day if I've done everything that I had planned to get accomplish that day. That comes and goes, depending on various factors.

3. A virtue? No. That seems like a category error. It is a desirable thing to experience peace, but unrest and Dukkha are essential to the meaning of life as well.

I don't think I can contribute to anything for #1 and 3, but as for #2, this might be a good place to start:

1. Do you require any inner peace to function in life?

Yes, I do. My younger self had a life that was filled with stress and toxic people.

2. Where do you find your peace, if you require it?

I absolutely require it. My introverted self prefers calm. I have lately stopped watching (listening to) so much TV. I have a need lately for silence more so than in the past. I went back to my hobby of sewing when the pandemic forced me to make masks. I find it very zen as well as being creative. Now everyone in the family has enough quilts to last for decades...LOL...I really need(ed) the peace.

3. Do you feel that it is a virtue, or just a state of nature(i.e. calm weather, no war, no one bothering you...like me! lol)

I don't see peace as a virtue. Some people thrive in chaos, some in calm, and many somewhere in between.

You know, that may be it. I might perceive myself to be well past the getting phase of my life and deep into the maintaining portion. I’m less and less concerned with getting more and devoted to judiciously applying what I already have, and that may even be the case in my apprehension of some kind of peace everywhere. It’s what I have, and peace is a judicious use of it, whatever it may be.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

To what extent are people thinking about peace in terms of contentment versus flow?

I prize being in the flow state which entails in my case a lot of discontent.

Ah, yes, nothing brings in peace like God

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Peace and flow are pretty much synonymous to me.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. My [serious] questions, if you are so inclined to answer them:

1. Do you require any inner peace to function in life?

2. Where do you find your peace, if you require it?

3. Do you feel that it is a virtue, or just a state of nature(i.e. calm weather, no war, no one bothering you...like me! lol)

I'll make my points after I've had some feedback. This has been a longtime curiosity as to
our divide. Not only here but with; family, friends & acquaintances who are atheists.

Thanks for your input! R

Hike, paddle, mow the lawn, run a saw, paint a room, sit outside, stare at water, listen to birds, cast for fish, play music, build a gadget.

I don't know if I can function without doing those things because I've never had to.  The topic is peace but that usually comes from doing things I enjoy.  So it's hard to say which the means to an end and which is the end itself.  In my younger days, I found peace kicking ass and raising hell.

1. I don't consider it peace but contentment, which I can experience when not at 'peace'. I'm not sure how that relates to function. I certainly enjoy life more with it but can function pissed off just fine.

2. I find it by not pursuing discontent and when it shows up not feeding when not necessary.

3. Why does this matter?
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.
