Pope Francis, of course, placed stricter restrictions on the Traditional Mass, the Tridentine Mass that was codified by the Council of Trent. It is clear that Francis & Friends wants that form of worship to disappear, the sooner, the better. But, hey, it's all make-believe anyway, and so, you Traditional Catholics, why not go into "schism" and elect your own Pope?? It's happened before and Catholic theology, being a constant work-in-progress for the last 1500+ years, some theologian somewhere can make it all at least sound "believable." Getting your own Pope will mean, finally, separating your bank accounts from theirs, once and for all.

A splinter group not having access to the financial side of orthodoxy is one of the main reasons that they -don’t- schism. It took the rcc years ( as in more than 1k of them) to consolidate the accounts and neutralize the threat of administrative or donor control in the institution.
It’s a business, it’s always been a business, and business is still good.

New religions start all the time. Fifteen or so years ago the Catholic Diocese of Atlanta had one of their lawyers send a vague letter to a traditional Catholic group in the area over the latters' use of the word "Catholic". The letter did not even rise to the level of being a legal DOA; I have always wondered if the lawyer in question was not disbarred.

The seeming liberality of Francis is an outlier, and - at 84 - he’s not long for this world. For all their screeching, traditionally-minded Catholics are perfectly happy to wait for the next pontiff to put things right. Boru

There's already multiple sedevacantist groups in America alone, and, as far as I can tell, the most popular one worldwide has a couple thousands. For a splinter group to make any real headway, there'd have to be some sort of unity in who the new antipope is going to be so it doesn't ends in a divide and conquer situation. And, hell, even in places where one group holds a monopoly, like the Society of St. Pius X in France, there's only about 1100 members. Admittedly, this only counts the priests, seminarians, and others that I think counts monks, nuns, and lay brothers and sisters, but, in France, they have 200 buildings, as opposed to 45,000 from the mainstream church in the entire nation.
