Pope blasts assisted dying as ‘false compassion’

Pope Leo XIV on Sunday condemned the legalization of medically assisted death as immoral “false compassion,” reaffirming Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life during a visit to Lourdes, the French shrine associated with miraculous healings.

On the third day of his visit to France, Leo again waded into the end-of-life debate unfolding in his native U.S. and countries around the world. The issue roiled French politics for years before lawmakers recently approved legislation allowing adults with incurable illnesses to receive lethal medication.

He sought to encourage especially those who live in “terrible pain” that they have inherent dignity that no law or algorithm can “eliminate.”

“On the contrary, it is precisely in the name of this inalienable dignity of the human person that we must reject the temptation to cause death under the guise of false compassion,” he said. “What is legal is not necessarily moral,” Leo said to applause from the crowd.

Catholic teaching holds that all human life must be protected and defended from conception until natural death, leading to its firm opposition to abortion, euthanasia and medically assisted dying.

Leo had specifically criticized a medical-aid-in-dying law that took effect in Sept. 12 in his home state of Illinois — the 13th U.S. state with such a law.

When it comes to endorsing the 'dignity of suffering' the Catholic Church is nothing if not callously consistent.

World’s highest-IQ man says he has concluded ‘God is real’

YoungHoon Kim, a South Korean scientist who has been recognized by organizations including the Giga Society for achieving an extraordinarily high IQ score, recently drew attention after posting a series of statements on social media declaring his belief in God, Jesus and the Bible. In one post shared on X, Kim wrote: "As the world's highest IQ record holder, I finally concluded that God is real, Jesus is real, and the Bible is real. 100%."

Kim's remarks have attracted attention partly because of his reported IQ score of 276, a figure that would place him far above the range typically associated with giftedness. For comparison, an IQ score of around 100 is generally considered average, while scores above 140 are often categorized as exceptionally high.

Yet scientists and psychologists caution that intelligence alone does not determine the validity of a claim about religion, philosophy or metaphysics. Questions surrounding God's existence are not scientific questions in the traditional sense because they cannot currently be tested or falsified through experiments.
