People commit crimes not because they don't fear getting caught. It's because they're put in desperate situations most of the time. If we want to reduce crime, we need to reduce poverty. But that's not fun for the guys who want to buy a bunch of tanks and go around shooting people and planting drugs on people so they can get an arrest. No fun for the corporations who benefit from private prisons, which they need to fill so they can make more money off of misery.

Police have fuck all to do with deterring crime. And deep down you know this, otherwise you wouldn't say "BUT I NEED A GUN TO PROTECT MYSELF!" cause you'd have faith in the police to do it.

I hate how the right is claiming that the left seriously wants to defund the police into nonexistence. Fact is, the only places with a strong enough democratic influence to defund police also have such strong unions that the police unions won’t let it happen.

Defunding the police isn’t about making police not exist anymore; it’s saying that small town police don’t need military equipment yet my parents small Oklahoma town of 30,000 has an armored humvee. That’s unnecessary.

Me, I think there’s a lot of stuff police are injected into that would be better relegated to others. Like, if instead of criminalizing homelessness and drug abuse, what if we tried to help the homeless get off the streets and clean up addicts? Police don’t need to be first responders for most mental health checks either.

But police don’t prevent gangbanging or dealing or pimping. They sometimes catch the criminals who do these things, and there’s always more where they came from.

And before you say it, I’m not against catching gang members or pimps.

low hanging fruit.  Turns out that beating doors down at o dark thirty has diminishing returns.  

Sure, maybe spending some cash on militarized police reduces some crime....a small amount, but the worst shit imaginable.  Meanwhile, spending far less on other shit reduces a whole hell of alot more misery.  I'd say that this is because most criminals...no matter what criminal enterprise they bank on, aren't invested in the anti-apc market. They're trying to sell baggies of dust. The product doesn't qualify for serious counter-enforcement spending.

I think that's going to change, fwiw. We have a whole generation of ex soldiers in poverty. We think we've seen crime, but we haven't seen crime, not yet. When a hay-ron syndicate pulls a bell jet ranger out of the sky with unaccounted for STA disposables on the grey market like it's just another tuesday.......

Just like the last boom in crime in the 50's and 60's - we'll be dealing with people who've been trained on top-of-shelf...off-shelf weapon systems, with no other way to make their nut. Large amounts of people trained by the us military in the absence of war has...historically, been a boon for organized crime in the us. Civilization follows the sun.

And if people, as a rule, could actually live on a McDonald’s salary, something that I distinctly remember you saying is not only impossible, but not even desirable because you believe that those jobs should only be for teenagers too young to live on their own, that comeback might actually mean something.

I wish Democrats would stop using the term "defund", because far to many people on the right don't understand what they mean. Liberals want police too. But what we don't want is the funding of assume the worst, shoot first training. I'd say "reallocate" the money, not from personnel, but reallocation to de-escalation training, non lethal detainment training, and not sending police to every call that may not have a high threat assessment.

Isn't it funny how the right spent 40 years attacking unions, starting with Reagan's successful busting of the air traffic controller's unions. 

And I also find it funny that they are all anti government when Dems are in charge, but pro blue when they have the majority.

If the right fears a tyrannical government, then why are they so pro gun? There does need to be a separation between federal military and local police. But if you are arming police like they are landing on the beaches of Normandy, they are belying their own logic. 

I think, regardless of party, if everyone is being honest, everyone wants both police and society to go to bed at night without getting killed. 

But if both society and police are armed to the teeth, regardless of zip code, urban, suburban or rural, there is no way mistrust will go away. 

Nobody sane likes living under fear of crime no matter their zip code, unless they are assholes like Al Capone or John Gotti.
