He's an astronaut like I'm a pilot, because I went in a plane!
The meek shall inherit the Earth, the rest of us will fly to the stars.

It's interesting the shit-fit that was thrown by 37 when Jeff Bezos did the same thing. But Shatner - that seems to be okay.
So it's really not about the money.

In fairness, The Shat didn't build a private rocket with billions in union busting, stolen wages, anticompetitive practices, and profiteering.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I’ll bet it’s grinding on him that Jimmy Doohan beat him to space.

As much as Shatner deserves this moment, I think it should be said, that while his art of acting, as much of a master he is, I'd still argue that if Carl Sagan or Neil DeGrasse Tyson took his place, it would be more fitting.
With all the various billionaire rocket launches in the past year, there were other passengers whom were scientists and better "firsts".
But regardless, I really hate media calling them astronauts. That is like arguing you are a pilot of a passenger jet because you bought first class ticket.
I am really happy for Shatner. But if everything is remote control, and you are merely along for the ride, you are a passenger.
It is great that he did what he did. And even in acting, I love the original Star Trek for it's value of diversity, and especially his cameos on The Big Bang Theory.

It’d be mighty hard for Carl Sagan to have taken Shatner’s place on this flight.

Seeing Shatner fly in the rocket and then giving that "speech" is, I feel, what the Internet was made for.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

No, you used neither analogy nor metaphor.
The only reason I would have watched William Shatner fly to space would be the same reason I’d watch a stock car race: hoping for a crash.
