Random Humorous Things - A Light-Hearted Thread

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The first person to hear a parrot talk probably needed counselling.

@ Fake Messiah

Now that's just wrong.

Besides, he's just called a bunch of bishops to Rome for a bit of blame shifting. The claim is that all those bishops who covered up abuse were actually breaking Canon law, so the pope can't be blamed. He didn't know because no one told him nor either of the two preceding popes. Right.

---and he seemed such a nice old man

An aside:

Did you know the Office of The Spanish Inquisition still exists, under a different name. Can't think Of the name right now.Something like:"Office For The Protection Of The Faith" At the time of his elevation to the papacy, its head was Joseph Ratzinger, former member of The Hitler Jugend.

I've said many times over the years, that imo, the only reason the Catholic church no longer burns people alive is because it isn't allowed to.

No, sorry.  You're thinking of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and it is emphatically NOT the Spanish Inquisition.

Yes, that's  what I'm thinking of.  I was under the impression that it is the modern remnant of the Office of The Holy Inquisition, albeit with no actual power.  This is not the case? do you know the origin of this  modern office?  I'm no doubting you, I'm just a bit confused.

The Congregation is and was primarily concerned with heresy and doctrinal challenges within the Church as a whole.  The Spanish inquisition addressed heresies both within and outside of the Church in Spain and its various possession (it had no authority outside the areas).

The Congregation was originally called 'The Supreme Sacred Congregation Of The Roman And Universal Inquisition', but was always separate and distinct from the Spanish one.  This may be where the confusion comes from.

I don't generally post inspirational stuff, because most of it is generally crap.  That being said, and in light of some posters here being brave enough to open up and look for help when they're feeling seriously down, I though this video might be helpful. It's new to me, but it does represent a coping mechanism I've used for years.  I hope it helps. WARNING: Some adult language.
