Getting the wires removed from my spine today. I wonder if I can get "Handicapped Veteran Android Historian" plates in Missouri.

That was years before cellphone technology.- and required a technician class or above license... It was the basis of cellphone tech - including the DTMF tones used in telephones and later cell phones.. You pushed a long-throw button that caused a tiny mechanical hammer to strike a tuning fork. The televisions receiver listened for the specific tones to drive their own mechanical motors. Pushing the "CHANNEL UP" button caused the TV's mechanical tuner knob to rotate, with a very audible "clunk-clunk", except between channels 4 and 5. There was only one "clunk". Ahhhh. Good times...
Disappointing theists since 1968!
My first radio was a Philco - tube. A.M. no internal antenna or speaker...
Beat that...
One of my dad's friends, who was an accomplished mechanical engineer, knew about the tones generated by the remote. He jangled his car keys and got the TV to change state.

You probably seen in some movie where the hero makes vocal beeping sounds into a landline telephone - thus dialing the phone.
Utter bullshit. The tones are DTMF - dual tone - that is, two audio frequencies at the same time. But... If you are really good (I am) - you can dial a landline by clicking the hang up mechanism with a quick break the number of times you wish for each numeral. This does not work with cellphones.
