Found a meme on ForwardsFromKlandma and was struck by how simple, but also stupefyingly wrong, it was on so many levels. Things like:
  • Are we just ignoring the Nile river? That looks like a perfectly reasonable way to pass the "impassable" Sahara.
  • Despite how impassable the Sahara is, it still manages to have hundreds of millions of people living within.
  • Then how the fuck did  Humans either leave Africa (if humanity originated from there), or how the fuck did they even make it into the interior of the continent (if they didn't)?
  • Maybe throw in a reference to Mansa Musa, who crossed the Sahara for his Hajj in 1324 AD.
  • You do know we could say the same exact fucking thing about, say, Britain, right? Like how they were supposed to be stuck on a tiny island so they couldn't wreak havoc on the rest of the world with their British empire?
  • Ssh! Nobody mention the Bedouins or the other nomadic tribes that have been crossing this impassable desert for millennia.
But then, I remember that 52 years ago, Sammy Davis, Jr. (or maybe Bill Dana, who wrote the episode) created the perfect rejoinder to this bullshit:

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
