Oakland School Shooting

RE: Oakland School Shooting
We have OSHA for work safety. The medical field is chock full of rules to protect both patients and aides. But when it comes to guns, do you think there are more laws in place to protect gun owners or the unarmed citizen?

No other industry has such a free for all protection from the Government. You can sue your boss for unsafe workplace conditions. Car companies have recalls for defective parts, and you can sue them too.

The NRA has unfortunately sold a mythological image of gun laws in America. The image of the gunslinger and a John Wayne western, is far from the reality back then. The truth was back in the real old west, firearm laws were far stricter than they are now.

Yeah.. No gun registrations - no NICS checks. Open carry was common..ownership of military grade  weapons was legal. Manufacturing guns and ammo was unregulated. Buying explosives was unregulated.

....

But because he saw they made you check your guns in a movie about Dodge City - gun laws were much more restrictive then.

Did a bit of reading since my last post. It turns out that quite a few Old West towns did indeed restrict weapons in the city limits (knives as well as guns), but this was almost always selectively enforced. It wasn’t so much a public safety issue as it was a way to disarm political and business rivals. Such restrictions tended to disappear whenever the office of sheriff went to the opposition party. But statewide or territory wide or federal gun regulations? None to speak of.

37 continues his unbroken streak of not knowing what the fuck he’s talking about.

Right. Sketchily enforced, temporary local ordinances.

Sheriff: You boys have to check in your shootin irons before you can come in town.

Cowboy: What are you talking about? Every local is carrying!

Sheriff: Deputies are exempt.

Prosecutors in Michigan took a rare step on Friday by filing involuntary manslaughter charges against the parents of the 15-year-old accused of fatally shooting four students in the halls of Oxford High School, saying that they had bought the semiautomatic handgun that he used to carry out the deadly rampage as a Christmas gift.
