THE Gun Thread
RE: THE Gun Thread
Here is the international symbol for "killing zone".

Wail and call me names - but you cannot deny - a person intent on killing people for sport are not real likely to obey such warning placards.

All you are doing is reassuring the monsters that they will be in charge - for a while.

It' s because a school is a soft target. I.e. lotsa easy targets that won' t fight back.

...

So - how do you change that?

I suspect that trying to make schools a harder target might be the tactic that does the least good in the long run. Even if we actually find a way that works, they might find another soft target. What would likely do better would be trying to keep potential shooters from following through on their plans. Things like increasing access to mental health services (for those shooters who are aware that something's wrong with them and need help before they do the unthinkable), a more thorough vetting of who's allowed to own guns (including mandatory psych exams for anyone who wants a license to carry firearms), Red flag laws (which, aside from confiscating them from felons, are the only circumstances where I would support the sort of gun confiscation you fear), and maybe some other provisions that I'll explain later because I just got a message there's a tornado warning in my area.

Bullshit.

Japan has very strict regulations on owning firearms. Despite what some may believe, they do allow for private ownership of firearms. But what they don't have is a flooded market and ease of access.

Australia had Tasmania, they put their foot down, they are still a open society.

New Zealand had the Christchurch shooting, they too put their foot down. They too are still an open society.

No, you are reassuring the monsters that they can go out and buy a firearm no questions asked.

Too bad there is no actual evidence that gun-free zones lead to more killings except for NRA-founded propaganda mills and the fact we know that shooters attack even if people had guns because most shooters aren't afraid to be shot as long as they can kill one person or instill fear for a moment they have achieved their goal. The presence of guns makes zero difference to a shooter who's already going on a suicide run.

Bottom line is that more firearms do not make us safer. I agree with you. But the long term picture is ease of access, crappy vetting system, flooded market.

This symbol has zero impact on a shooter they would shoot a place up even if it wasn't there. They are trying to go out in a blaze.

RE: THE Gun Thread
And now that I’m actually in the basement, I’d also like to add to the list that I was writing things like cracking down on unlicensed firearms dealers and creating laws to increase security for parents who are responsible gun owners to keep said firearms safe from from children who might want to use them less responsibly. In addition to the increased access to mental health services, increase in vetting who’s allowed to possess a firearm, and the red flag laws I mentioned in my previous post.

But then again, maybe Biker thinks this would be a better idea:
