Family is always asking me to come to religious celebrations

You should go. Bring rabbit stew. Also, show up naked, covered in Vaseline. They probably won't ask you to any more dysfunctional family functions.

@Gawdzilla Sama I gotcha, so you've been an activist that long now? Damn, that's really interesting, do you still talk to any of cousins?

@no one Lmfao, funny idea, but no, I just won't go to their 'Easter celebration'.

Easter, as celebrated by Christians, is just plain silly. They want to make Jesus the main focus while being blasphemous with Eostre incorporation.

@Tomato right so true, as @arewethereyet it's all about the candy lmfao, I think it's also where they want a reason to celebrate anything they can about their 'faith'.

Oh, I have contact with many of them, most of whom would say "Never talk to him." Safer for them that way. The younger ones come to me for rational advice. The older ones come to help them deal with the lunacy.

@Gawdzilla Sama Great way to give believers a dose of truth with 'The God Delusion' Well that's great your family still speaks with you and that you can lead them down the rational path of truth.

RE: Family is always asking me to come to religious celebrations
I never had a problem going to religious celebrations as an atheist.

My family and friends, despite some of them being religious, are more important to me, than making some sort of 'statement' by not going.

In fact, many times I will go out of my way to go, just to be with family who I don't get to see very often.

I can be a pretty outspoken atheist, willing to debate anyone at just about anytime.

But avoiding family get togethers because my family will be pantomiming ancient superstitious ceremonies and rituals, is not a hill that is worth dying on.

But that's just me...

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

My family has always gotten together for Zombie Jesus day. It is a celebration of gun rights.

Recently, having new nieces and nephews in the family we've taken the occasion to show them that magic is real.

We have them place a jelly bean in the ground and burry it. They go to sleep and the next day they rush out in the morning dew, wetting their pajamas in their eagerness to see what the "magic Jelly bean" has grown!

It's always a bullet. So fun!

Then we shoot minorities. Like Zombie Jesus intended.

Don't take it seriously. If your family was holding a "festivis pole dance day" would you turn them down because it was "religious"? It's an opportunity to spend time with your family. Fuck em if they want to pray over you. It's not like you'll catch fire.... or will you?

At my age, staking your pride out over little things isn't worth the time lost with love ones.
