Horror fiction
How many of you out there are fans of horror stories/fiction? As long as I can remember, I've always loved horror movies, stories, monsters, Halloween, and the occult. Anything/everything that is considered dark, forbidden, macabre, heretical, or off limits from "normal" people has interested me, hence the nickname my wife gave me several decades ago.

I've accumulated a small library of horror fiction, the history of Witchcraft, Satanism, and Halloween, along with Norse history since I was in high school(a really long time ago). I've read just about everything written by Poe, HP Lovecraft, Brian Lumley, and Charles L Grant. If I had to pick a favorite, it's probably Lovecraft. I started collecting his stuff when I was in high school and college.

Several books in my collection are over 40 years old. I also have collected a series of books published by DAW titled "the Year's Best Horror Stories" that was published from 1971 until 1994. I've managed to find every book in the series except for volume II, I never did find it.

I've been reading Darcy Coates' stuff lately, I'm finishing my 4th book of hers before I start her Grave Keeper trilogy. I don't ever see myself not reading horror fiction, it's been in my blood for far too long. Anyone else?

Would you tell me a bit about Ms. Coates' stuff. I am not so much into horror but do like a good thriller.

So far, they've all been stories about haunted locations, and the things people have done to deal with their situation. So far, I've liked everything I've read.

Seen enough horrors IRL. Silly horror is still fun however. "Lesbian Vampire Killers"

Not a big fan of horror, but I like Stephen King as a writer; he crafts deep characters. Tried reading Lovecraft, Koontz, and others, but meh. The genre really needs a deft touch. Most don't have it.

Horror fiction never did much for me.

I recently read I Was Dora Suarez by Robin "Derek Raymond" Cook. It's not necessarily horror, but it's notoriously disturbing. How disturbing? The author had to switch publishers because the manuscript made the old publisher physically ill.

Here's audio of the author reading the part where the Detective Sergeant discovered the body (under hides, Viewer/Listener Discretion is Fucking Mandatory):

If you haven't already, I recommend the illustrated works of Junji Ito

Like movies, horror fiction has to be intriguing or original for me to read it.

I did start reading a series of books about a vampire hunter named Anita Blake (can't remember the author).

The first couple were okay until the books degenerated into her being nailed by just about every male she met.

I'm the opposite, I can't read stuff from King or Koontz, too long and drawn out. Basically, they're boring, with 'cliche endings.
Just my opinion.
