Taking care of my first dead body in the nursing home to prepare it for pick-up.

RE: What Is The Hardest Thing You’ve Ever Done?
I guess the hardest thing in my life was the panic attacks that I suffered for several years. From what I understand, panic attacks typically don't last for more than 30 minutes. Mine were commonly an hour or more. I remember one night when the panic came upon me, I felt that if I just started walking and kept walking, that I could survive the panic, and that if I stopped walking, the panic would take me over and I would go insane. I walked for six hours before I finally could just not go any further and sat down in Menards, expecting to disappear inside myself and go insane. But I didn't go insane.

I have trouble thinking of any of the stuff that's happened to me as hard because it has never seemed that there ever was a choice. That whatever I went through, there was no point at which simply not doing what I had to do was an option. And so none of it feels in that sense remarkable to me. Because I never really voluntarily chose to do something hard.

Quitting smoking. I started seriously trying in 1996 (first spawn was born). I finally succeeded on Apr. 22nd 2019. I've been smoke free for a little over four years and nicotine free for about three and a half. Not only was it the hardest thing I've ever done, some days it still is. There are weeks that go by, sometimes even months, where I never even think of having a cigarette, Then there are weeks where every day is a struggle. But, it continues to get easier tear to year, and even when I'm really jonesing, the fact that prices have climbed around 250% over the intervening years is a hell of an incentive to stay far away from them.

It's hard to quantify hard things I've done in my life, and there are many. The first thing that comes to mind is surviving 12½ years of Catholic schools without going insane. The second has got to be resisting the urge to murder my father after decades of physical and mental abuse.  Huh

Digging a grave for my Chihuahua Max. I've always made a point of burying my pets, They deserve a nice final testing place.

With him, it hit me more deeply than any before and someone else had to finish it.

Hardest thing I've ever done is what I'm doing now. Some years we roll in cash, others I'm basically a bum with a garden and nothing but dirty fingernails to show for it. We're nowhere near the end goal, which is a turnkey income for all four of our kids, whether they want to do it or just manage it, and a self contained house that can hold all of them, all of their children, and last at least as long. I'd prefer to die knowing, not hoping, that my kids and grandkids will always have food, water, shelter, and power. That the most difficult decisions they'll ever have to make are all elective.

Living the dream, you know? I think that's always hard, whatever the dream is.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Losing my first patient on the table.

You wonder if you did everything you could. Even after you're told that you made no mistakes and, sometimes, people just die.

I was #1 nozzleman on PELELIU's in port fire party. One day we had a fire in the acetylene storage racks. I was pretty sure I was going to die that day. Arrgghh
