2024 US Presidential Election
RE: 2024 US Presidential Election
Good luck Democrats... and the rest of the world... for tomorrow's election. I wouldn't usually follow an American election with such baited breath, but here it feels a Trump win brings us all one step closer to WW3, or at least hangs Europe out to dry. Scary times... good luck to all of us.

Quote:Preserving democracy and inflation are top of mind for voters
More than 3 in 10 voters said preserving democracy is what they’re most thinking about, when asked what they’re thinking about when casting their ballot. That was followed by inflation, immigration and abortion issues.

Of course, there’s a divide by party and who people say they are voting for.

Preserving democracy is most important, for example, for Harris voters, but it’s also top of mind for independents. Half of Harris voters and 3 in 10 independents cited it as their top issue. So maybe it’s no surprise that this is what Harris has been focused on in her closing arguments.

Trump voters, on the other hand, said inflation and immigration are most important for them. Independents said inflation and immigration were second and third most important after preserving democracy.

Notably, when voters were asked what their second choice would be, abortion rights is second behind inflation as the second-most important issue. That was especially true for Democrats, showing just how salient and motivating the issue is for them.

I hope this is a good sign. I have been seeing clips of his rallies with tons of empty seats.

People attending political rallies during a political campaign must be an American thing. We tend to rally a good while after campaigns are over, usually waving signs that say things like RESIGN, DICKHEAD!!

The enthusiasm gap is palpable. I think Trump and the GOP will regret having worked so hard to alienate women. Dobbs will be their undoing.

That's something that seems out of whack with the polls. Harris has had larger and more enthusiastic crowds from the beginning and it has only gotten more pronounced as time has progressed. It's impossible to miss now. One would think she should be at least 5 points up in the polls.

I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise tomorrow night.

It's likely just wishful thinking, but I wonder how many of these polls are facing the same issue that they did in '16. Many people voting for Trump weren't, at that time, willing to admit they were going to vote that direction. It makes me think we may be seeing more of that, but with people, especially women, claiming Trump support but favoring Kamala in reality. Something along the lines of...

Wife (who's husband is within earshot): Why, of course we support Trump.
Wife (to husband): Of course I'm voting for Trump, Honey
Wife (in the poll booth): Yep. Voting for that misogynistic asshole to get fucked!

I'm hoping that this kind of voter actually gets to vote in a booth, as opposed to some controlling husband watching her and forcing her on a mail-in ballot. And I'll lay long odds on that having happened, especially among the Gravy Seals®.  Hehe Picked that little sobriquet up at a shooting site, believe it or not.

That's my assessment as well. Women may well be sandbagging the pollsters.
