Hi Angrboda,

Thanks for the history. You are correct that I did not know. I’ll watch out for that in the future.

I don’t want to give any support to the style of the poster, and I suppose I might be missing something in what they are saying so that my re-wording may not be consistent with their intention. However, It sure seems to me that this is true. “Everything has to come from something. If there is a thing that doesn’t come from something else, then that thing must be eternal.”

(January 23, 2024 at 12:19 pm)Angrboda Wrote: Btw, that's not what eternal means.
No, of course not. I was going for the laugh. However, it’s an obvious consequence of being eternal, that is without beginning or end. If something doesn’t come from something else, then it is without beginning. That’s what I meant. Yeah, there’s the whole end part but we’re not talking about the end.

Thanks again.

My reply doesn’t ’ignore the point being made’ (because snow isn’t making a point, merely regurgitating an unsubstantiated claim), nor is it abusive.
Agreed that it’s not abusive. And let the records show that it was stated as such.

I take it that you are saying that snowtracks isn’t making a point because of the history of the way they post. Fair enough. If the post doesn’t look for a response/conversation, then ignoring it is a good choice.

And if only you hadn’t picked on KC. Maybe you have relatives there. Of course, if you mean KC, MO, then by all means. Mock away. :-)

There are theories of the universe in which time is finite but unbounded. It would be a bit misleading to describe the universe as eternal under said theories as the concept of eternity generally implies an infinite and unbounded time.

As a personal matter, I suspect the idea of infinite unbounded time is a conceptual error, inherited from prior times. It may itself be incoherent or simply impossible.

I didn’t know there was more than one Kansas City. Anyroad, the line is a Groucho Marx joke.

Now you are out of my league. I do not know those theories nor the strength they currently hold. Are you a physicist of sorts?

Wait. I just read a post on stackexchange about this idea. I am now an expert. Wink

I love it. Sorry for being obtuse. Thanks for the reference! Clearly, I need to watch some Marx Brothers again. It’s been a while.

That can happen when you blindly google phrases.
