I have no idea but I can't say I've seen many ordinary people speaking up for him. ETA: Sorry, this post has nothing to do with Deesse's post, or any other post really, we just happened to post at nearly the exact same time. This is just something general I've been wondering about for a long time, but never looked into.

A lot of independents voted for Trump, but he's significantly underwater with them now.

Thanks Smile I was just curious in general whether people thought if Trump-voting Americans could turn back the clock would they vote differently or not (or the same question for the future) but I don't know enough about the intricacies/technicalities of American politics to go much deeper than that. But what you've said does sound promising Smile

But you're talking about Trump, right? I was talking about Starmer (I've edited the main post a bit earlier to make that clearer)... as in saying I might vote for Starmer because of his standing up to Trump (because I'm British not American). I think we might have got our lines crossed is what I'm saying, unless you meant Starmer was in poor health, but if so I never knew anything about that. Sorry anyway, doesn't matter.

No, I was talking about Trump. Apos for misunderstanding you!

Quote:A new study from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy found that Americans bore 96 percent of the costs incurred by President Trump’s tariffs last year.

The study, which analyzed shipment-level data covering over 25 million transactions, found that firms importing goods into the U.S. absorbed only 4 percent of the costs from the levies. The remaining 96 percent was passed on to American buyers, while U.S. customs revenue surged by roughly $200 billion last year.

The Kiel Institute noted that firms passed on tariff costs to buyers due to, among other reasons, the existence of other markets in Europe, Asia or elsewhere and difficulties switching suppliers.

This war on tariffs is really not a joke. Emanuel Macron had very strong words for Trump today with D. Trump still remaining defiant. Ursulla Von Der Leien said that the previous trade deal with the US (with no tax for US goods entering Europe and %15 taxes for most European goods entering the US) would be cancelled if Trumps puts new tariffs on European countries. This is the Bazooka or Anti-coercion act that was adopted in 2023.

German and French wine producers are gradually turning toward Asian markets.

I don’t know if D. Trump understands the true meaning of “economic war”. It means less profit for companies, dislocation of companies and job losses and decrease of income for ordinary people.

If populist leaders keep coming to power like this there will be no NATO, no UN, no EU, no international law, just some power centers in constant warfare with one another, very likely something like George Orwell 1984 Novel.

I don’t see any other logic here. He is really trying to blow everything up.

Sad

It makes sense if you look at Trump through the lens of Putin-puppet. This may be too conspiracist for many here, but Trump's behavior makes perfect sense if we posit him as an FSB asset.

Trump may be an actual, knowing FSB agent or just appearing to be one because he’s so gawdawful stupid that Putin can play him like a fiddle.

A difference which makes no difference IS no difference.

I'd call it speculative rather than conspiracist. It's not conclusive, but it isn't contradicted, and it doesn't require invoking magical thinking.

I freely admit it's speculative. I also think it's the Occam's Razor solution to why he behaves the way he does. It coordinates cleanly with Putin's twin goals of dissecting NATO and undercutting support for Ukraine. It's also congruent with most of his decisions being to America's detriment.

I have no contravening evidence, but that isn't positive or dispositive. I do think that it should be a matter of consideration. Russia and previously the USSR have placed moles in the upper levels of American government before and would likely be a focus of further efforts. I know I'd do that, especially if I'd had their previous successes.
