Quote:SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Two months after Mormon Kate Kelly led hundreds in a demonstration to shed light on gender inequality in the religion — defying church orders to stay off Temple Square — the founder of a prominent Mormon women's group is facing excommunication.

Kelly said she was shocked, dismayed and devastated to receive a letter Sunday from the bishop of her congregation in Virginia informing her that a disciplinary hearing had been set for June 22 to discuss the possibility of her ouster. The leader of Ordain Women is accused of apostasy, defined as repeated and public advocacy of positions that oppose church teachings.

I'm sure they'd burn her at the stake if they thought they could get away with it.

What kills me is that, as far as I understand, they call their disciplinary hearings "Courts of Love" - what bullshit.

Hopefully denying women equal status is the LDS church is what kills the religion, but in the meantime it sucks to be an LDS woman.

Intellectually, I understand all religions are effed up, but damn, the Mormons just seem so much MORE effed up than most all the others.

And I guess with over 100 schisms since the 1830s, quite a few Mormons concur . . . .

I watched this the other day

and my BS detector was going off with some of the stuff the BYU guys were saying. They came off like apologists, agreed that they were no-true-scotsman-ing virtually every example of Mormon behavior and every Mormon stereotype they were being given to address Facepalm and I wondered if they weren't engaging in the practice of lying for their faith a couple of times - particularly in their claim that the LDS church only does baptisms for the dead when they have permission from the family to do so.

I waffle on my opinion about Dave Silverman, I think he could have done a better job here and that he was being a little obtuse in a couple places, but these BYU guys had "fishy" written all over them.

She's certainly stupid enough to be a Mormon.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Quote:The diary of the 15-year-old Oregon high schooler who shot and killed a classmate and injured a teacher before turning the gun on himself revealed that the teen was a religious fundamentalist who was out to kill “sinners.”

According to the New York Daily News, freshman Jared Padgett was known at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Gresham, OR as being quiet, but was “highly regarded for his spirituality” by church elders.

Should've started with that last step and saved a lot of people the heartache.

RE: Damned Mormons
There were a couple of Mormon door-knockers whom I liked back when I lived in SoCal, they were cool and respected my lack of faith. They didn't try to proselytize me, but if my neighbor who was the Mormon wasn't at home, they'd sit and talk, sometimes for 30 or 45 minutes, and they'd listen as well as talk -- cool kids, these two.

On the other hand, the organization they served helped to defeat Proposition 8, and I regard bigotry as a wickedness to be fought tooth and nail. So while I don't hate Mormons on an individual basis, I detest their organization and look forward to the day it is forced to pay taxes for its dabbling in the political sphere.

Pity there's no legislator with the balls to chase that case down.

I'm surprised they hung out with you so often. Most missionaries will move on if they don't find that elusive "golden convert". Yes, this is what they call them behind closed doors.
