Banning Social Media for Everyone Under 16
#11
RE: Banning Social Media for Everyone Under 16
How can anyone suggest government have more oversight on an individual's use of the Internet? Our president spent an hour posting nearly 90 bitchy posts on his "Truth Social" site just a couple late nights ago. Not only is he not qualified to oversee the usage of social media and the Internet in general, but he is amazing at picking the absolute worst people to head up government projects.

The Internet is here and is widely used. You can't unring this bell.

Quote:They [the UK] are banning junk food commercials.

This is not true.

Quote:They’ve already banned single use plastic

This is not true.

Quote:Ireland was the first country to ban all tobacco products in the year 2004.

This is not true.

Quote:On the other hand China has very strict rules on computer and internet usage that go back 20 years or more.

Strict rules are not the same as bans.

Quote:You might think they are very smart. But they have smoking bans only since 2010.

Smoking is not banned in China.

Before the internet we had huge volumes of encyclopedias in our houses. We had something called “The medicana” for instance. I used to look up for unheard of illnesses or symptoms when I was curious about a situation. Or if you had a doctor uncle or something like that, you would simply give them a phone call or ask them.

So the internet is one thing. Chat GPT (for instance) is another thing. I don’t advocate Chat GBT. It you have a tool like the internet why wouldn’t you do some reading online and do your research yourself instead of hiring a robot to do that for you?

/So no. Besides: The internet is a system designed to remain functional even in the case of a nuclear war.

I am not talking about the complete outlawing of any of these substances. I think this has to do more with limitation and reducing rather than forbidding these things completely. I mean I hate social media since facebook came out. There were other platforms back in those days but I simply never liked the idea of advertising myself to the whole world in that manner. But to some people it’s as real as daily life. And it’s their freedom to do so.

And here is a nice video on how consumerism has corrupted our entire food supply. Even the alcohol today is basically sugar and ethanol. Pure poison to our system. While medieval alcohol (like Meade for instance) used to be a form of nutrition and a healthy substance that people would consume on some occasions:

And I even have other videos like that. But you may do the research yourselves. Look for basic flour for instance. In many place they now have bread made of einkorn wheat flour which is not a simple commercial trick. Einkorn or whole grain breads are actually 10 times healthier than regular white flour breads. The first is a superfood. The second is basically sugar that looks like bread. (I am not an expert but that’s how I understand it).

So we may try to regulate all of this instead of letting profit oriented companies dictate us their ways so they can make more profit.

Then you clearly don’t understand the difference between ‘a restriction’ and ‘a ban’.

I will admit to enjoying his backpedals, though.

Dude...you had encyclopedias?!?!?!?!

Amazing.  Simply amazing.  I am 68 years old so I think I know how to use the encyclopedia.  In fact, what we had was a college edition so when I was researching for school papers I had them to work with and a dictionary at the ready so I could understand things written well above my grade level.  I even used the town library and its card catalog to supplement information.

I adapted to computers and the Internet not only because I had to in order to be employed but also because it's a wonderful tool for looking things up, for entertainment, for social interaction, and for everyday tasks like paying the bills.

Parents need to monitor (as well as they can) what their kids do online.  The government is over-involved in our lives the way it is.

As if 16 year olds aren’t tech savvy enough to find their way onto an age restricted site.

There's a difference between not getting it and not agreeing with you. Some of us simply don't agree with banning things "for your own good" because "we know best".

When things get banned, they simply continue being done in secret. And no one more than the rich & powerful love doing things in secret.
