Chinas strategy seems to be to do step #1 before #2 and #3. China seems to be invested in keeping good relations with traditionally friendly regime slike North Korea and Russia, and apply military power towards competitors across open waters like Japan, Taiwan and Philippines. Getting involved in the Middle East seems to be at least 2 steps ahead.

Normally, I'd agree with that assessment, and I suspect that's the direction that they'll go. OTOH, if Trump's blundering starts causing them real pain in terms of petroleum, then they may be forced to deal with a situation that's neither of their making nor something that they want to be involved in. Xi may find himself in the unenviable position of needing to be the adult in the room.

Because Trump's way of going about things is amateurish and chaotic, it gives the impression that he doesn't have any real planning behind what he's doing.

If he could, his foreign policy might be marginally more effective. A military maxim runs something like, ‘Don’t announce your next move to the enemy, especially on social media.’ -  Clausewitz

Most synthetic dyes are petroleum-based, although some countries have began phasing those out. A bigger concern is plastics.

Iran cannot go on with this war for more than a month or two. As I said before, if they cannot export their oil, they will have to shut down their oil wells. Once they are shut down, these are complicated to put back into operation.
 
The only problem we have is that few people are trusting the current administration in Washington. I’m seeing military experts on TV who are saying that D. Trump might just leave tomorrow morning and let the Europeans and Gulf countries correct all the misdeeds he has done.
